I HAD PURCHASED A EBAY CONSOLE,NOT SURE WHAT YEAR, AND IT IS MISSING THE ASHTRAY DOOR, I CANT SEEM TO PURCHASE THE CORRECT DOOR, THE CONSOLE I HAVE HAS NO CUT OUTS FOR THE LEGS OF THE DOOR TO SLIDE THROUGH, CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME FIND THE CORRECT DOOR.
If the console is for a '68 or '69 then there is no ashtray (I assume you are talking about the rear of the console). The rear of the console had a cover that was also woodgrain.
400 droptop, I have an 'extra' piece for that , no ashtray , but its the cover where ashtray could go...its burlwoodgrain...pretty faded...but in case of need , you can e-mail me at bsefeldt@mhinc.com and I might be able to get it to you....or I can take pic of it for you and email.. Sounds like it's a 67 console. With the ashtray at the back end, and the slotted light on the back end itself. These cams in the camera grain finish in either black or the interior color of the car. They had a drop two piece plate for the shifter. Same for Camaro's
The 68/69 console got the BurlWood treatment, no ashtray or light and the shifter section differed. Auto mounted on top of the console and was a one piece plate, while the 4 speed was the center section with the shifter tunnel so to speak, all one piece.
The basic console under the wood grain plates is the same for 67/68. It even has the chrome trim and camera grain etc... so you could get the top pieces and turn it into the 68... and you may just be missing the rear piece is all? Is there a light on the back of the console?
If you decide to get a whole new 68 console at some point, I'd be interested in looking at yours.
I used the semi-gloss black interior paint from Classical Industries. But then, I have a parchment interior with black accents and will use the same paint on my dashboard.

Brett, When you figure out how to strip your console let me know how you did it. I have 2 bad paint jobs to remove. I'm getting ready to try something.
I used Classic Industries interior trim paint in black, but it took me to cans to get it right. The first can would not spray, only splatter. They replaced it the next day, but I had to make two trips.
As far as stripping, most of the paint strippers I am familiar with tend to melt plastic. Try 3M's website. They have quite a few products just for plastic parts. There is also a website - www.autobodytoolmart.com that sells body shop supplies. You could go to their web site and then call them and see what they recommend for plastic. I guess you could try blasting the paint with plastic media or soda - but not sure how the plastic would hold up.
I was able to use a scuff pad on my console, clean it real good and then applied primer for plastic parts followed by the Classic Industries interior trim paint. It worked very well.
