I just ordered a wiring diagram manual today. I allso have a 69 firebid. If you can be more specific maybe I can look at mine and let you know, if not let me know next week I should have the manual. Pete
Ok here's the deal,I have a 1969 pontiac firebird with a 350 in it this car has a points distributor. From the ignition I have two wires one of the wires runs to the starter the other I have hooked to the positive side of the coil and it is a constant power when the ignition is switched on.There is also a ballist resistor I installed on this line to the coil. And last I have one wire from the distributor to the negative of the coil. The problem I'm having is the ballist resistor keeps turning red hot and smoking when the ignition is in the on position.Does anyone see any flaws in my wiring.I don't know what im doing wrong?
the Ballast resistor should only be powered during cranking, it seems to me that you have wired the resistor into the "run" circuit. Remove the resistor from this circuit and identify using a test light/meter the "start circuit". the resistor is only used to assist starting when cranking during battery voltage drop. Check that you are using the correct coil, it should be marked for use with/without resistor. I have a 69 and have never experienced starting problems. I beleive the vehicle did not come witha a resistor circuit!!!
The wire that is only the start wire is connected to the s side of the starter the constant power wire from the ignition is connected to the positive side of the coil and this is the wire with the ballast resistor connected to it.And the single wire from the distributor is on the - side of the coil does this sound like it is hooked up correctly?
By the way I blew up a coil today from running the ignition wire to the coil, the wire that stays constant when the key is in the on position, that is why I added a ballast resistor to the line. The engine the car had in it before had an HEI dist. in it and was wired for it.
I just got my wiring diagram manual from AMES PERFORMANCE ENGINERING, POOR QUALITY can hardly read it.Here goes the translation. A of the ignition goes to + side of coil ( there's some gobbily gook on that line but I can't read it)I don't see any resistors. Z of the igniton goes to the starter solinoid ( must be a negative can't really tell) Negative of coil seems to go to blower motor. Hope this helps. Pete
