I have an HEI distributor out of a 1978 pontiac trans am and I want to know if it will fit in a 1969 pontiack firebird 350.Any help would be appreciated.
You may run into a couple of problems. 1. Firewall clearance, seems to be diff on every bird. Mine is 1/4 from firewall, heard others say won't work and 2" of clearance. 2. Need a 12 volt source of power, resister wire to points dist won't work. 3. smog motor HEI will have heavy vacuum adv and little mechanical, should change vacuum canister and mech adv springs. This is a tuning thing with any motor!
I just put an HEI in mine also and have a wiring question. There is the original coil wire with a spade connector that shows 12v KO, and then there is a black wire with a yellow tracer that shows 12v key on. The blk/ylw wire has a connector that will plug right up to the HEI + terminal and isn't used, will it work? I have no clue what it was originaly used for but the car now has a BBC.
BTW, My HEI just required a little clearancing of the firewall to fit. prob just a 1/4". Used a propane torch to heat the firewall a little making the metal more maleable and gave it a couple love taps.
