just wonderin if anyone could give me an example of the difference between a gear drive cut for noise and one that is crowned for a more quit operation.. how quite is it? I want people to know its there so is it worth it to spend the extra bucks for a loud one??
I'll have to check to see what brand I have. It's got two idler gears floating and is very quiet. I can't even hear them. Not what your looking for doesn't sound like.
Loud ones sound like you have a vicious blower under the hood. I have one on my beater truck, but one's enough for me (i.e., won't be putting one on my 'Bird). If you need to draw lots of attention to yourself, they are the way to go.
P.S. They are VERY loud for the 1st couple hundred miles. As in forget talking in the vehicle or listening to the stereo.
2012 Mustang Boss 302 #1918, Competition Orange. FGF replacement 2006 Mustang V6 Pony, Vista Blue. Factory ordered. 2019 BMW X3 (Titled to the wife, but I'm always driving it for her. So I'm claiming it) Old projects, gone but not forgotten: 1967 FB 400, original CA car. After 22 years of work, trashed by the guy who was supposed to paint it. I had to sell it. 1980 Turbo Trans Am 1970 Mustang fastback, 351C 4Bbl, auto 1988 Mustang GT, 5 speed 1983 F-150 4x4, built 302 1994 Chevy K2500 HD 4x4, 454 TBI
I agree with Salmon, there. My GTO sounds like it has a blower under the hood. As you already know, it's a straight-cut Milodon gear set; single idler with a block plate and their 7- bolt vernier adjustment system.
My 69 400 has quiet everthing. While everyone else is sitting still, belching away, all you hear from my streak of lightining is a huge vacume cleaner and a quiet scream. Why would anyone want to add noise? Do you realize how many tickets you can avoid when traveling in stealth?
I just checked with the guy that I got mine from. He said it was an Eldebrock Accu-tune( or something like that). He said it was real loud on his goat but I can't even hear it on my bird so maybe it depends on how you install it too. I bought it for the noise but I'm just as glad it doesn't make any.
The noise is only apparent at idle. As soon as the RPMs come up past about 1200, the rest of the engine noise covers the gear drive noise. Of all the tickets I've talked my way out of, none of them was the result of the cop hearing any noise I made.
