This has probably been addressed before but... I went to install my new handles and the holes don't line up. These are from Goodmark. Does anyone know if Ames handles line up ok? I really don't want to slot the hole in a freshly painted door.

Mine are the same, but for some reason the drivers side lines up but the pass. side is about 3/16 off! The plating looks good, so I am going to modify the door slightly (also freshly painted) I'll just have to reseal the paint after. If I recall I believe I decided to open up the large hole on the one side to allow it to slide into position, using a dremel, with a grinding attachment. I'll tape the sides in case I slip!

You can see in the casting where they should have tapped the hole, has a pilot area. They're about 3/16" off for sure. Cheap Tiawan crap. I noticed the door holes are slotted slightly, just not near enough. I'd buy others if I know they'll fit. Guess I'll call Ames and see if they know since they offer two different ones.

My supplier is getting me another set from the other mfg, should have by weeks end. Only other option is GM @ $54 each vs $69 a set. I'll post back when it's done. Hopefully these will fit but he said no one has ever returned the Goodmarks before for that reason.

Got my new handles, box says "Trim Parts" GM restoration parts Made in USA. Camaro-Firebird The rod is shorter and the hole is tapped in the right place. I'll try them this weekend. They were $20 more, but made in USA is worth that alone.
The job you save might be your own.

Original GM handles sell for $54 each, no button or gaskets. These are original GM and not "GM authorized" repops. Although they are nice (repops) I had to turn 4 sets away from 2 vendors due to casting deficiencies and chrome hazing. If they are imperfect under the handle, fine, just do not send me a set of blatently obvious imperfections.
Buy the buttons repop for $14 as you can only see so much of it.
The handle is what you want perfect, IMO.
If you can hop on board with someone getting a Classic Industries 20% discount, that would be a great idea.

I'm working on my BIG classic interior order with the 20% off. I think I have until mid March to get it in. But my local guys wants a shot at it to. He's a good guy, knows all the mfg,s the wholesalers and what they sell. They're are only so many mfg,s of this stuff.
Agree on the handle quality, as with anything, needs to be good, but I don't get overly picky, just want a good one. The handles from Goodmark looked cheap and didn't fit. The Trim Parts looks much better. Makes you wonder though if someone is building a car to sell vs keep, you could save a fortune on inferior parts and most buyers wouldn't know the difference.

It takes so long to make the piece of crap, inferior part fit that you would lose money! Factory seconds are a drag on time.
I like the GM handle only idea. I will check my original buttons when I get home...I'm sure they can be buffed. Is it reasonably simple to change them out?

I (for now) have polished up one of the originals....I'll be after the GM cores tho. I tried to give the repops I have a buff....only about 1 second or so....took the chrome right off to brass so it's prtty obvious the chrome SUCKS.
Buffed the originals for minutes, no problem. These repops were the cheapos I suspect.

I installed the Trim Parts handles Saturday, no problem and they look fantastic. Much better than the cheapo brand. The push pin was the correct length as well. The gaskets needed just a little trimming for a neater look but I suspect you'll find that on any of them though.

My passenger side original cleaned up great so will use it. I-ll try to clean up the drivers but it's likely got more wear, in which case I'll replace both with the GM shells.
A little amazed at how poor the plating was on the cheapo's, one of my Ebay brain farts! Litterally made one quick pass on the buffing wheel and chrome vanished!
