Usually painted on top of transmission Th400 or a stamped steel tag attached to the cover...For Muncies. I have not seen a Muncie FF or FX painted on top of case, but have never actually owned a car that I could confirm. After 39 years and a few rebuilds, time has usually removed any traces of painted on two letter codes.
This thread really has me examining my Trans. For 20 years I've just assumed I had a Muncie 4sp as my old Chilton book shows. Never knew there were so many Identifiers.
From all that I've read over the last 24 hours, you are correct in saying that only the Muncie had an Aluminium Casting.
I've run all the checks that are posted here and from other searches, and it apparently I do have a Muncie. I should find out next week what type it is, I'm having the trans looked at by a good guy that should be able to tell me. I think I have some synchro issues between 1st and 2nd gear.

Just want to add how much fun I've had reading all the info on this site, amazing amount of good posts and info.
It's really more of going from 1st to 2nd. If I try to shift it too quickly it's not pretty, especially after winding out 1st a little. Some hestiation on the shift and it's fine. From 1st to 2nd is usually not bad, maybe because I'm usually slowed down to want to get into 1st.
So have a lot of others had synchro issues with these?
