I'm trying to figure out all the vacuum ports on my new Quadrajet (Autozone $149 new - ask for a 4 barrel for a 1969 Firebird 400). I'm going to hook up my power steering to the threaded portion at the rear (in the baseplate). I have 2 vacuum ports on the front and 1 on the drivers side I believe (carbs not in front of me right now). This is a non-EGR carb also. I needed to figure out where my HEI distributor vacuum advance needs to go and where the transmission vacuum modulator needs to go. Any ideas?
The vacuum advance connects to ported vacuum. To check the vacuum - feel the vacuum hole on carb. if it gets no vacuum at idle but starts to get vacuum if you rev it then thats the ported vacuum. I Beleive the brakes and transmission can be connected directly to the intake manifold which is manifold vacuum, vacuum at idle, though i'm sure the carb has some manifold vacuum ports on it.
This is a rebuilt Pontiac 350 engine that has never been started. I would like to be able to have all the vacuum lines connected before I break-in the engine. The car originally had a Chevy 305 in it (previous owners mistake), so I don't have a reference on the Pontiac engine of what vacuum line goes where. I looked in the FAQ but it only references the vacuum lines connected to the "vacuum modulator" (behind carb on passenger side) and the "VCS" (front of carb in water passage of intake). I have neither of these on my intake manifold.
you dont really NEED to have them connected to start the car.... I think the tranny uses vacuum to shift and the brake booster gets its boost from vacuum and the vacuum advance doesnt kick in until you start cruising... you can install it all fire it up then connect from there if you really want to. Thats the way I would do it, just keep a low idle on fresh engine while you determine which is the ported vacuum source on the carb.
Also, if you connect the vacuum advance to the wrong source then it will advance the timing at idle.... I would steer away from that on an engine break in, I dont know if it could cause damage but I wouldnt chance it.
If your looking at the carb from the front....to the pass side of the fuel inlet is the vac port for the trans. the pass side center goes to the air cleaner. The center rear is for the brakes if you have power booster and it should have 2 ports. the smaller goes to the ported vac switch. the dist runs off the ported vac switch. You can get that from Ames or year one. Hope this helps you. Ray
