Any ideas where I could get a manual trans for my 69 'bird? I've checked with a couple tranny shops and "we don't do that kind of thing". I currently have a th350 that is on it's way out and would like to go with a 4 speed. I heard that I won't have to change my crossmember or driveshaft because the 350 is the same length as the 4 speed used from the factory.
depends where you are located, and what you want, Muncie or something sporty. There are good deals and bad deals (EPAY). Let us know a location and there are guys on board who can help you. Better look at the additional bits required, cause they add up fast.
Hope you have deep pockets. You are going to need all of these parts to do it right, or you could spend about 1/4 as much and rebuild the TH350, or spend 4500 bucks for a tremec 5-speed conversion. go to www.keislerauto.com
Rebuilt Muncie 4spd (M20 or M21)... has to be small output shaft tail ext to work w/ correct fitting shifter. -Correct 68-69 4 speed shifter -console (if desired) -Quality clutch & pressure plate (Hays, Center-force, etc) -10.5 or 11" flywheel (uncracked) -early F-body m/t pedals, throwout bearing arm -Z-bar (clutch linkage)w/ clutch pedal rod -'69 back drive linkage
now parts are getting cheap... -bellhousing -repop or good used shifter purch -throwout bearing -different backup light swith for '69 column -two ball studs & subframe mtg bracket -rubber shifter boot -outboard column sealing plate & rubber boot -return spring -Flywheel to crank bolts -pressure plate to flywheel bolts
4 speed cars generally go for more money on resale. The books put them up 15 to 40 % over an automatic. That's a real simple equation that doesn't take in a lot of things though.
they do bring more money but it is not cause it is a better set up.it is only cause there are alot of people in their 2nd childhood that like to play with the gears.that will change in time.
Average around here for a used M-21 Muncie is about $600, rebuilt about $1000, M-22 about $1600. The 3 grand number is probably pretty darn close.
When I was a kid I had nothing to play with, when I turned Twelve I found I had something all along When I turned 16 and found 4 speeds I now had two toys to play with.
Wanting a Custom fit in an off the rack world.
I don't have time for a job, I just need the money.
Wow, I never expected so many responses, thanks! I did a little adding and 3K does sound accurate(I already have a manual console). For less than that I could have an automatic overdrive. Thanks again you guys helped me make up my mind, I'll stay automatic. Although a 700r4 or 2004r does sound good.
