I know that there is a million types and brands of Motor oil and just as many opinions about what to use and most everyone has a brand of their own and so do I, so here it is, summer heat, 400 Pontiac motor, standard oil, or synthetic, what weight is best to run? 50, 50 racing, 10W40, 5W35? Whats everybody running this summer and why? Thanks!
ok... the difference between synthetic and normal are so minor you would never know the difference unless you were racing in nascar or somethin. If this is your baby and you have the money to spare go ahead and get the synthetic if not the normal will do just fine. synthetic oil was made for airplane jet engines and they just figured why not make it for cars? umm me personally I use a sae 30 in all my cars and thats what I recomend to my freinds in the area.
Actually there are major benefit to using a quality Synthetic oil... as has been discussed on this list as well as most any lists...
I personally have used Amsoil for 20 years now in most all of my vehicles... many of which have made it well past the 250K mark thanks to Amsoil!
All I'm saying is you owe it to yourself and your cars to check the facts yourself. I'm not trying to sell anyone, but just a few of the benefits are slightly better power and performance (you can use a much lighter oil with much higher protection) better fuel economy, longer lasting engines and components, reduced heat and the list goes on, etc...
But, there are times when you don't want to use a quality Synthetic, like on a fresh rebuild (it protects the moving parts too well and the rings wont seat well etc...
But all the major High end High performance cars come from the factory with Synthetic in them like the Vette, and the Viper etc...
I usualy use about a 5W30, and when thay first came out with it I tried the 0W30, and had good results (better milage, quicker responce) But with 7 cars, and that grade being in thier upper end price wise I went back to the basic 5W30.
You can run much lighter weights with better protection, so you get better performance, and better milage, and changing the oil once a year (filter a few times a year) saves you some coin!
Hope that helps, but with any change, I suggest you do your own research and check it out for yourself. But I'm a believer myself.
Oh, by the way, the wifes 97 Blazer just blew an intake gasket, sending all the coolant into the valley, and into the oil pan! This had happened over a period of maybe two weeks!
I have no doubt that with conventional oil, there would have been permenent damage... but with the superior protection of the Amsoil I was running, the engine was fine, and there was no evedence of any internal damage.
Hi Ray, they don't recommend Synthetci for break in, as it usually won't seat the rings as well since it inhibits the friction etc...
After break in, maybe even after the first season, I would then switch. Better yet, contact Amsoil, and or search on their website, I'm sure they have the answer there!
It's excellent on High Milage cars! You get improved power and milage, and it will last even longer.. or many more miles that is!
Brett , how often do you change your Amsoil? As often as 'regular' oil? like, since we dont usually put that high mileage on these cars, I normally change oil ev. 6 mo., dont have time to pu 3K on it...but w the synthetic , can you 'keep ' it longer...? Bjorn
