I think it depends on the individual car....mine has them...heard others that dont and have no problem...but also heard of 'shaking' in cars without them....if your car doesnt have them and have no problem I wouldn`t worry , but if it doesnt and has some shaking I would try to add them... without them you get less weight and some more space in the trunk... No , they have nothing to do with the tops , but they fit on convertibles....they are oil filled round metal containers ,one in ea. corner of the convert`s, to stabilize shaking/vibrating that occurred in some convert`s. ( they are also called 'vibration dampeners', coctail shakers are the generally used term, not the scientific, lol) and they were different sizes or different fasteners for diff. years , so you need to have correct year. Not sure if they actually could be made to FIT w wrong years.. They are easily installed and/or taken out , only a couple of bolts.... I have taken mine out a couple of times , to easier get to the corner bumper bracket..( had to seal a leak there) hope that clears it up for you Pete. Bjorn 69 vert.
Cocktail shakers were used on convertibles. They reduce vibration that was the result og a non-rigid top. There are two in the rear (50 lbs each) and two in the front (25 lbs each). I believe there is a difference in mounting between years..at least 67 and 68. My bird was missing the two in the rear so I salvaged a pair from a 67 Camaro and they did make a difference in the ride.
50 lbs , no wonder they were heavy to lift out of there! lol Easy to unbolt and bolt back in though....and I have no vibrations in mine , that shou;ld mean they work!
Glad it helped Pete, and Thx for the comments on my car...guess you looked it up on the online show...no 221
Gents, My '69 convertible does not have the shakers installed and it rides like a can of creamed corn - very loose! And that is with the X brace installed. This doesn't say much for the X, does it? I have since procured all four shakers for the car but haven't installed them yet. Actually, the car will be ripped apart for restoration or sold to a guy that has been bugging me.
Interesting ... My '67 convertible does not have the shakers in the front or the rear, and it doesn't have the x-brace or subframe connectors either. I do have a vibration on the highway, but I was thinking it might be due to an unbalanced driveshaft because it seems sorta "harmonic." Now I wonder ... any comments? And does anybody know a place in the San Diego area that could check out my driveshaft and balance it if necessary?
