That's about as far as they go. Especially if they are a little stiff from sitting. I do not remember seeing one hitting the interior piece like that though. The pics are a little dark so it's hard to tell why.... Maybe that piece is bolted on wrong?
I tried to install my boot, I remember it being a pain back when. It clips on the molding and snaps to the interior, but I couldn't get it to stretch near enough. Plus the flap that covers it to the seat back doesn't come close to covering the top, much less coming to the seat back. The top fold lays on the seat back and would stick out from under the boot. Looked kinda dorky so I left it off.

thats about how my friend Andys looks on his 67 , mine on my 69 disappears totally, nothing sticks up...my boot fits fine over it ,but is still a pain to snap, at least the last 2,3 snaps , no matter where you start...
Thanks Jim, I was looking at the top down and wondering if something might be hanging up, the material is pretty tight. If I did as you say it might free it up. The sides where the pivot pin hit the panel might be pulled out slightly to clear and it go down in the well. I'll try it this week.

ho, that's how far down my top goes. Any further the top would be difficult to get up. Your boot has probably stiffened up over time. Try some vinyl care products, and then set it out in the sun to get good and warm. That may stretch it out some.
Curosity got me about that screw hitting so I had to go out and drop mine to find out. Sure enough, the right side (passenger) just nicks the interior panel and after 39 years, has left a small wear mark. The left barely clears the panel.
Jim, my 67 is just like your's passenger side hits a little, driver side clears. When I put my top downI pull it over a bit to clear the screw and it goes down some more.
My top and frame folds down past the well covers on my 69. Looks like a split vote on the issue so far. Looking at the wear on your interior, I would think you would prefer it to be able to slide past without landing on the cover.
