I am having a problem with two of my birds, (a 67 and a 68) both
"leak" heat when driving with the heater controls in the off position. The cables are functioning and do operate correctly.
I removed the glove box liner so I could access the heater box, the control door appears to be closing all the way. Has anyone else had this problem & found a fix?

Usually it's the heater door seal. If you do not want to take it all apart and repair you could put a manual shut off on your heater core hose.

I have a heater box out of a 68 that is not in a vehicle, it appears the only thing that could go wrong is the rubber seal around the door. i am not quite sure how I would go about reparing it? any ideas?

Swap the door for one with a good seal. Sometimes a previous owner has switched out the heater core and hasn't paid enough attention to getting everything sealed up. That could be the problem. Either way, swapping out the box and paying close attention to the seals will fix the problem. You could take a look and see that the seals around the heater core tubes are intact where they protrude into the engine compartment.

I would be the guy who did not pay close enough attention. seals are good. I just cant be sure about the door. Do you recall if the heater box can be removed and leave the core attached, I have not tried that.

I have the same problem....could not find an "inline shutoof", so I made one... got a couple of brass fittings from home depot, one with a shut off lever, cut the rubber hose to the heater box along the valve cover in a spot easily accessed , installed my shut off there...brass fitting a little heavy so I also installed a bracket that holds it away fro the valve cover, paint it engine color, and now I can totally shut off the heat...open the hood , open /close it..usually once or twice a year...summer /winter
I know ,its "rigging" it , but works well....dont have a pic available...but can take if wanted...
I`ll be with my car in an hour or so, I`ll take one , just incase...

thebirdhangar You remove them together. Unless you have a 2nd gen and then you can't remove them together. Be glad it's a first gen! Much easier.

The 69's with air conditioning have one that is vacuum operated and it closes when you turn the AC on.

Good idea Bjorn. I was pointing out that it's a 'nearly factory' item. It's just a little up stream from where you put yours. I have mine so it's shut off all the time the engine is running because I hooked straight vacuum to it. If it gets cold I use the other vacuum line from the AC. That way I can keep it closed without having my air conditioning running.

That looks like a 1/2" gas valve Bjorn.
Does it have AGA stamped on the side ?

AGA, a Swedish gas parts (and stoves)manufacturer , nope...it doesnt... just a common Home Depot cheapie...cant remember if its 1/2" now , but I suspect its 5/8"?
