hey guys hows it goin? well i just got back into another first gen... i bought yellowbirds 67 400 4 speed car that has a 71 455 in it. but my question is that i went to put on a fan shroud today that came with the car that says it is 4 a 67-69 firebird. well i put it on and low and behold the fan hits the shroud. so does anyone know what the factory 67 fan size what? thank you very much guys
Good thing you bought the car Daniel. I had a tax refund burning a hole in me pocket.
There are several different fans for different applications ranging from a 17.5" 4 blade, to a 19.5" 7 blade clutch fan. Where is the fan hitting the shroud? Does the radiator have clips at the bottom for the shroud? Correct radiator?
Is the fan shroud you have for Firebirds? 'Bird motors are offset to the passenger side to accommodate the steering gear. So the fan opening will be offset in the shroud as well.
Sorry about all the questions, but I think the fan size isn't the problem. Having the correct shroud and it being attached correctly are more important.
lol, no worries about the questions, the more the marrier haha.
but the fan is hitting the shroud at the bottom in the center of it. and no the radiator does not have a clips at the bottom for the shroud. and the radiator has the mounting tabs on the side of it and it looks like it was made for this car. it looks like a 3 core radiator though, no idea if they came with those stock. and the shroud says that it is for 67-69 firebirds. so any help would be great. thank you very much
i will try and get some pics later today. but dont know when i will beable to do so. and its not really a big deal to me... just curious what the fac size was that came on the cars from the factory. but i will get some pics asap
well i measured the fan today and it is 18 and 3/4... ut it every blade has some bit that is broken off of it, and it barely hits now with that size fan. so i think i will just get a 17" fan and have the problem solved. so thanks for all the help guys.
That will not solve the problem. The fan needs to take up the whole area in the circle of the shroud or the engine will not cool as it should. We can help get it straightened out for you. I think you would enjoy the car much more without overheating problems that Pontiacs are prone to have when the cooling system isn't just right.
well the car isnt overheating at all! the car has only gotten above 190 once, and that was due to really low coolant. and if i get that 17" fan... it will fill out the shroud pretty well. but yea i need to get some carb work done before i can really enjoy the car lol. but thank you once again bud, i really apprecaite it. the fan i am getting is super cheap and if it doesnt fix the problem then it is really not that big of a loss.
