Are you talking about the dual-snout, chrome lid air cleaner housing? Good luck. They go for over $200 on eBay for rusty patrs neededing a good sanblasing and re-painting.
DAN,I CAN CHECK MY SOURCES TO SEE IF I CAN LOCATE ONE FOR YOU.I AM GOOD AT FINDING PARTS.I WILL NEED TO KNOW EXACTLY WHICH PART IT IS YOU WANT.I WOULD BE GLAD TO HELP YOU IN ANY WAY I CAN.
Quenton, My first problem is that as of right now I don't even know what the original parts would have looked like But, I'm learning as I go and with you guys' help I'll get this car looking correct and pretty darn good
It sounds like my second problem will be finding the parts.
Terry, Any help would be really appreciated.
I'm going to go do some searching online but do you guys know the part numbers or have pictures of what that assembly looks like?
It sounds like I'll be trying to find some rusty ones and have them rechromed. The search is half the fun anyway
According to my information, you should have a chrome top air cleaner. The 731 code you mentioned is listed as a "dual stage" H.D. air cleaner. I am not sure if this is dual, as in two intake snorkels (sp?), or if the air filter itself is dual stage.
Your post says your car is an A/C car. My 350 HO is also an A/C car, and my air cleaner is single snorkel. If in fact you need the two snorkel with chrome lid, Quenton is right - they are hard to find and expensive on eBay. I agree with Terry (for a change) - give Ron at Potomac Pontiac Parts a call - 301 668-0101. I was up there not too long ago and he has some air cleaner set ups.
Dan, I'm not positive... but pretty sure that the Dual snorkle was for GTO's and others, and that the First gen Birds had only the single snorkle aircleaners. In 70 it changed for the birds. (been trying to get some factual info on this)
So that is one reason the dual snorkle aircleaners go for a premium, as most GTO parts do! Good news is you can find the singles cheaper!
Your's should be a single snorkle with a chrome lid, H/D air A/C Delco filter still available at Napa.
Like I said, not 100% on this, but this is what I've been told by a few sources now.
As Brett is reminding me, a lot of my memory is couded with GTO facts, and that I may not always get the Firbird stuff "right-on" the first time.
Also, he's dead-on about the second gen Birds getting the dual snorkel version. I recall many of the 2nd gens having them, but I may have been too quick on the keys to speculate that the first gens also had them.
well tom,at least we all agree on the first gen birds.we all are always going to have different view points on things based on out own personel experiences.
Daniel, I have the build sheet on my car and it tohas the "air Clnr HD-731". My car is a 350HO-400 with a/c. Got the PHS documents on it. IT came with the dual snorkle air cleaner on it and it's still on it(can't believe I found this car in a junk yard!!). So....I believe some First Generation Birds did come with the dual snorkle air cleaner. Hope this helps .
I can send you a pic of mine if you need it.Its sitting on top of my engine on the engine stand....lol. The pic is a little dark but you can still see the dual snorkles.
Ray, Yes, please send me the picture of it. Send it to danieldykstra@yahoo.com
Well, if this turns out to be true then it looks like I'll be trying to sell the single snorkel unit that I just bought on Ebay
But Ray, almost all of the info I have gathered the past few days points to there only being single snorkel on the 69's. We need more people with this option to let us know what they have on their cars.
I know I probably threw a wrench in the works with the air cleaner but I can only go by what was on my car when I bought it and the PHS papers I sent off for.I found this car in a junk yard still completely intact. The guy said he had just got it from a estate sale and a friend bought a ' 69 conv. he had at the same time.Still had the AM radio in it and all matching #'s. The rear end was sitting on the ground and only had front wheels on it. I have pictures of it sitting there all the way to where she sits now, doing the body work on it.Was only gonna get it running and drive it but you now how that works out, totally restoring the car now.....lol. Hope this helps. Ray
As Jim mentioned: The 731 code you mentioned is listed as a "dual stage" H.D. air cleaner. The air filter itself is dual stage.
The firebirds all had the singe snorkle, at least the ones I know to be documented and correct... I've seen many with the dual snorkle air cleaners on them, but none were documented, and most also thought it could have been easily changed along the way as most figured the dual snorkle would provide more air...
But all the documented info I've seen to date indicate that Firebirds had the two (three if you count late 67 production as they possibly changed to the 68 version etc) While the 68/69 had the single with the two lid options (Black or chrome)
Was searching for some info for the filter elements and saw this topic again... sorr to bring up old posts..
The heavy duty air cleaner for the 1969 looked like the one in this picture. The 400 engines all had chrome air cleaner lids, while the 350 cleaners were black.
Hmm - I just gotta ask - what about the ram air birds? If the 2 air scoops in the hood were open, didn't they pipe air into the air filter via two snorkles? (1 for each?) That was always my assumption...
'68 Firebird, 350-4, 2 spd auto, triple black, Dlx Interior
Sorry, forgot the RA! Yes, there is a base pan on the carb, an airfilter in that, a foam seal that mates the lower pan to the upper pan that is mounted on the under side of the hood and directs the air into the base pan... so essentially the two pans seal off the hot under hood air and pull cooler air from the scoops in the hood... Ram Air.
As I read and remembering what I had seen, I stopped to break out the bible, an origional press 69 Pontiac Service Manual, covering Grand Prix, Tempest, and Friebirds. As Brett mentions, and as stated in the manual, the dual stage cleaner is the element, not the snorkel.
Page 6B-1 states that the "dual snorkel is used on all atandard GTO's." All air breathers are shown for the 69--from 6B-1 through 6B-4--and there are no dual snorkels on Firebirds.
That's okay! If not being the "correct" breather bothers you, I'll take it because as long as it looks good, I don't mind incorrect stuff on the car.
