Trying to find a template for the proper location of the 2 "400" emblems located on the hood scoops for a 68 Firebird. Also, I got the template from the FAQ page for the deck lid "400" emblem, but have a question. Should the holes be inline with the "Pontiac" lettering holes?
Keep in mind that 400 hood emblems on a flat hood will not work properly and will look very improper as the 326 + 350 emblems have a tapered top that touches the hood and raises the emblems upwards and the 400 emblems do not.
BTW, to me measuring the trunk lid hardley works (for me anyways)I find it easier to tak a 3" peice of masking tape and lay it on an original trunk lid with the emblem off use a pencil to highlite the edges of the trunk lid and poke the holes thru the tape to the correct size and then simply transfer the tape to the trunk lid in question and drill away...I also find that a small drill hole centered works great then use a unibit to the exact size. hope this helps...It has never failed me.
Seems to me that you should already have some holes in a flat hood because they aren't selling repros. Maybe I'm wrong.... Not that the holes would be the same spacing but you would need to use one and make the other.
This actually brings up something I was wondering. When I got my car the 400 hood emblems were tapered. I assumed it was correct. I spent alot of time looking for a set of new ones only to find the flat 400's.
I know at some point in the past the car had some front end damage and the hood was replace (sometime in the late 70's). Is it most likely the repair shop wound up using trunk ones on the hood?

What I meant was that if the hood already has holes then you wouldn't need measurements because you would want to use one hole and hide the other(wrong spacing). At least that's the way I would do it.
If you had tapered 400 emblems , I think Jim is correct ,they probably used trunk emblems....I`ve never seen tapered hood emlems for 400, 350 yes, b/c less slope on hood = - scoops
so the 400 trunk emblems will have different holes , since left and right 400 emblems arent the same , nor do they have mirror image hole patterns... hood emblems slope/lean one way on left side , opposite slope/lean on right
Ya, the 350s are the same way as you described, Mr Sefeldt. I assume so that they wouldnt accidently be put on the wrong side?
, yes Mr Davenport...I think its basically just so the "tabs" to get the speed nuts are in good spots , since the "lean" is forward on both emblems, they will not mirror ea other.....
The 1.06 is inches. Use a limp tape measure and wrap in along the curve from the lower edge.
I put 400 emblems on my 326 hood. The holes are different and it's tricky. I made cardboard 400 emblems by tracing the emblems and cutting them out. Then I positioned them strategically to cover the 326 emblem holes, then marked the new hole location and drilled. Came out great, except for the fact that 400 emblems don't belong on a flat hood.
Thanks for the info, looks like I've got what I need for the Trunk. Anyone have a 400 hood they can make a template off of for us poor guys who need it?
The pins that go thru the holes in the hood are in different spots on the 350 emblems and the 400 emblems....So if you are using an original 400 hood, you will have to drill more holes in the hood for the 350 emblems as well as the 350 emblems are tapered out and the 400 emblems are flat.
my hood is a fibreglass 400 .there are no emblem holes in it and i know the spacing is different between the 350 and 400 emblems.so i can place them where i want as to get the best fit, just want to try and get them close to where they should be.

since I havent seen the underside of a fiberglass hodd, I may be off , but make sure whereever you drill holes you can get the studs at least 1/2" clearance from braces etc ,so you can get a nut on , plus a wrench!
I made that mistake on one stud on my rear Camaro Spoiler and 400 emblem!
At car shows, I have seen the 400 emblem slanting forwards or rearwards, depending who's car they were on. Which way is correct? I'll take photos next time.

both are correct , they are opposite on opposite sides...next time look at both sides, they slant the same way in relation to the car...both slant forward in the direction of the car...but since you read the text differently, the 400 leans backwards , but towards the front of the car on passenger side, on drivers side they lean forwards ,and towards the front of the car...makes sense? but the "tilt" on the lettering is flat ,since they sit on the raised scoop area vs, the flatter 326,360 hood there they are tilted more ..makes sense?
