Hi out there-I put an oil filter adapter on my '67 to angle the filter to allow installation of factory style "long branch" exhaust manifolds. The thing leaks terribly! The thing is basically a machined block of aluminum with 3(!) gaskets and a thin metal plate that gets sandwiched between 2 of the 3 gaskets. I don't recall if I got it thru Ames or from Ram Air Restoration(where the manifolds came from). Has anybody else attempted to use a setup like this&had a leak free success? Seems like an awful lot of gaskets, and they seem to be just like a thin cardboard material...The diagram that came with is VERY elementary (hand drawn&photocopied). I was going to take it apart again and use RTV along with the gaskets to see if that would help-or would that only add to the problem. Perhaps a "relocation kit" from Summit or Jegs may be the ticket? Any thoughts out there? Thanks!
sounds like you did not torque it down evenly of messed the gasket up.try using some high temp rtv and that should seal it.make shur you torque it down evenly cause it is aluminum
It's really common to have your bolts bottom out in the holes. You think it's tight but it's not. We hear this just about every time someone swaps one of these.
I just installed one to. But since I'm still waiting for an exhaust sys I haven't had a chance to have the convertible running. As I recall, I did find one of the bolts provided was to long.
I couldn't stop mine from leaking no matter what kind of sealant or how tight I made the bolts. Somebody here suggested the bolts bottoming out. I measure the bolt hole depth vs bolt length and it was too close for comfort. Then I added washers and no leaks!
Sometimes the threads do not go all the way to the bottom of the hole so allow a 1/4" for that. It all else fails it may be a high spot on the new piece. You could use a hand hone on it to make it flat on the sealing surface.
If you do the relocation kit, be sure to get the one that feeds the lines from the side, not the bottom. The bottom style puts the lines right on top of the longbranch manifold. I installed the Trans-Dapt kit with the TRD-1420 filter adapter, and still had to cut the spin on threaded pipe on the housing because the adapter did not seat all the way. I also haven't started the engine yet, but it looks like a good seal.
