Hey all, this is a stupid question I am sure, but should there be a matching VIN number on my engine, that matches my VIN on title etc? I have a 1969 and I do see the YJ stamped on the engine, but not sure of the VIN on the engine.
Yes, on the front face of the block, on a boss visible behind the lower radiator hose just behind the timing cover. It may be easier to read it from below. It's a machined flat pad, not hard to find once you look down there.
If you have PHS, there is also an engine unit number (normally on PHS, not always on billing history) that matches the number above the YJ as well.

So on your 69, is it a ID of some kind that matches with your PHS doc, or is if your VIN number? My Car is in the shop and I stopped by there today, and just happened to look at the number, it did not appear to be long enough to be my VIN to me. I am going back by there today, I will try to write it down, but its hard to read, and Ill take a good picture of it, while I can see it.
As you can see from the picture above it's just a partial VIN. It will have a VIN. Whether it's your car's VIN is the question. The number that you match up from your PHS is the one above the two letter code.
'67 has only the Engine Unit Number that matches the PHS Billing History. '68 and '69 have both the Engine Unit Number and the partial VIN. In addition, all casting numbers are documented and dates must also be correct for your car's build date.

I ordered my PHS couple years ago, and having a hard time finding the dame thing So Ill need to reorder it, but I am cunfussed by the term partial VIN, does that mean just the first so many numbers, or the last so many numbers, how does that work? at this time I only know my VIN on my title. So I guess can not really tell anything till I reorder my PHS docs again or find them? I have never really worry about the numbers on my engine, mostly cause I dont work on my own car, and its been a pain to get to that numberand look around before. I am going over right now to take some picture of the engine rebuild on my car, and I will try to get a good picture of the numbers on the engine.
BTW thanks for your help, I really am bad about this stuff
It will be the last 9 characters from your VIN. For example 79N111696. They just lopped off the beginning numbers which are not as specific to your car.
YU is a 1970 255hp 350, built for full size car (Bonneville, Catalina). Pretty much the same as the engine your car would have had as far as performance. What heads are on it?

I guess that number could have been a YJ and not a YU, its really hard to read the stampings, but it did look like a YU Here are some pictures of that part of the engine, its really hard to see in the pictures, but what you think?
