On my Sebring ( Austin Healey replica w F**d 302) I had electric only because of no space...ran fine ,but was kinda noisy.. On the Bird I have now , (it used to be a 350, formmer owner put in a 400 and evidently got proiblems w heat..) when I bought it it had no X fillers , one masticated filler at the bottom side of radiator missing and had an electric 'help' fan...that did not always work , bad connection...and it ran fairly warm...210-220 on sunmmmerdays here in Houston w 95-100 outside on hills it would creep up in traffic it would creep up some.. I got the X fillers, installed the missing masticated filler , evidently had the filler panel under...and temps went down...I then got rid of the electric fan , which at this point only slowed air flow across the radiator, and now it almost runs too cool, 175-185 now on around 98F days...I do have a new cluth fan ( 1.5 yrs old) and a metal blade....Never did check the thermostat , but may have to, to now possibly add a statb w/ a higher setting...its not good to run too cool either , more wear on engine.....but I did remove the electric fan on my bird...for the two reasons,1) noisy (when it ran),2)in the way when I got everything elso to work, Bjorn
the way i found out the clutch on my fan was shot, as told by a goat owner, after the car warmed up, and was at operating temp for a while, try to spin the fan, if it spins freely, its shot, if it has resistance to it, its working fine.
Hot rodding, whether virtual or real... is a religion. Once the Holy Spirit of Horsepower infects you, you will see true Nirvana. And it shall be fueled by nitro-methane.
The best way is to hook up an electric fan,I have one on my 69 Bird.I have it hooked up with a proper temp.switch,so the fan comes on at about 215-225 and shuts off at 200-205.You can buy this switch at any parts store and make your own system,as for the fan I have a fan from a 1997 Crown Vic Police Cruiser,it covers the entire rad,I made some brackets from polished stainless steel and mounted it to the rad support where the shroud used to be.As for the clutch fan,it will turn slow when the engine is cold,as the engine warms up the oil inside the fan becomes thicker causing the fan to spin.If you want to find out if it is good, with the engine cool, grab a blade of the fan and try to move it back and forth, meaning towards the front and rear of the engine,if there is any amount of play chances are that the fan is no good.Hope this helps.
