Hey all, Why are my butt welds burning through on the new metal and not sticking on the old metal??????i have tried running the heat up and down and i cannot find a happy medium. At this rate im going to go through a mile of wire and 10 grinding disk. Any ideas out there?.. Hope everyone is having a good Memorial day. After a rainy parade this morning its actually nice out now. Daren
What welder are you using? What are the settings? What type/size of wire? Are you triggering the welder on/off, or are you trying to run a bead with the trigger pulled? What type of gas are you using? Is the old metal ground clean and free of rust and debris? Is the joint fitting good and tight? Those butt weld clamps with their .040 gap don't work too well. You can put copper back-up behind the weld and that will help.
a old silver bueaty<sp> i have 4 settings its a 110v unit. .032 wire small spot welds. old metal nice and clean. Less than .040 gaps around .020. After i posted i went back and tried again, i think i have a ground issue. I went back and added anouther ground to the old sheetmetal. seems to be working better.
you need to have both pieces grounded to weld good. also you shouldn't have much if any gap! wire wheel the old steel and use weld through primer. also your burning through because your heat is set too high! use more wire. put the welder on heat setting #2 and the wire on #3. you should have more wire than heat when it comes to sheet metal! make your tack weld 6" apart and go around the whole panel. do this till its warm or you've completely welded the whole panel. don't get the panel too hot or it WILL warp!
