I still have the problem of the ignition switch missing the "run" position. Is this a problem with the ignition cylinder (the part the key goes into) or the actual switch behind the dash?
if it skips back to off after start, that's prob'ly the lock mechanism. they're fairly cheap, and easy to replace ( required tool--paperclip), but it's the same key as for your doors, so you either have to buy a whole set, or have a locksmith change the tumblers.
Actually I have a 68 Firebird and the lock cylinder (what the key goes in to) is brand new. I tried the old lock cylinder and it didn't work either. NAPA has a ignition switch for $20 so I will try that and see if it works.
The new ignition switch (the part that goes behind the dash on a '68) fixed my problem. But now the new fuel pump (30 minutes of run time with 0 miles) died. I guess I know what I will be doing after work tomorrow! Someday I will have this Firebird on the road.
Your situation sounds just like mine...same car, same start. When I first got it, it needed a new ignition switch...then the fuel pump went out. Hope you don't have the same problems afterwards...new carb, manifold, radiator!
