Having my 69 350 rebuilt. I was going to have the orginal cam machined and reinstalled however it was suggested that I step up to a Ram Air IV Cam. The rebuild is nothing more than a stock rebuild. However I am changing from a 2bbl to a 4 bbl 600 cfm.
I have a complete cam package for a Pontiac 350. I purchased the Cam (068 grind), lifters and valve spring and retainer kit from Crane. UPS made a shipping mistake and I've ended up with an extra kit, its For sale pretty cheap. Originally 300 bucks. 150 plus shipping gets it. All brand new in the box, lifters have plastic wrapping around them.
Those numbers don't match the specs of the Ram Air cams, or any other Pontiac cam, but it's probably a replacement for an 068, like the Summit 2801. Without decent rebuilt 4 bbl heads, that may still be too much cam.
RA IV cam (I have one) is 230/240 @ .050", 308/320 adv., .516 gross valve lift with 1.65 rockers (factory spec).
RA III used 067 (auto) or 068 (manual) same as other 400. 1969 9779067 200/213 269/277 54 113.5 .408/.407 1969 9779068 212/225 288/302 63 116 .408/.407
When I spoke with the tech at Crane, I referred to the grind number "9779068" and he pulled it up immediately. That is the grind he sent me and I'm confident that it is the 212/225 288/302 116 LSA and .408/.407 lift.
I'll post that cam package in a few days in the forsale forum.
The 068 was used in the 350 H.O.'s. They also had big vlv hesds, and the cyl bores were chamfered on the intke side for better flow. Also need a 750 q-jet and long branch exh manifolds, or 1-5/8 to 1-3/4" hedders with dual exh to make it work well.
The 214/224 with .443/.465 lift is a generic grind produced by almost every cam company on the planet. It works quite well in most 350-360 sized engines of all makes. It can be considered a mild performance cam that has decent street manners with a bit of a lope in a Pontiac 350. One size down from that would likely be more in line with a stock rebuild.
Comparing the information at summit it looks like I could use the 2800 or the 2801. your thoughts on the two? It's a street ride but I would like to give it a little boost...Is the 2801 to much, which is similar to the lift and duration of the orginal one I picked.
I would say for your combination, stay with the 2800. It doesn't have much more duration on either intake or exhaust, but more lift. This will give you some additional power without sacrificing idle quality and off idle throttle response.
I would also go one further since you are in process of rebuilding anyway and elongate the pushrod holes to run 1.65 rockers. This will again add more valve lift. The additional lift will help with those small valves on the intake.
