Maybe Vikkie or someone here knows more than I do about windoz and XP. I backed up to a resore from May, but that resore to the drive include a cookie or login issue that I need to solve.
I have tons of software stacked onto the installed system, and it all wokred well until a power glich or memory leak debacle recent weeks ruined that install.. I built the system over and all was great until a power failure glitched my hard disc. I should have backed up the restored working system, because there is a lot of drivers, some of them not to stable.
I restored a new drive to the May system, but the log in bug I faintly recall from May lingers with this restore. I can't log in to forums and post with that system. I've done the usual delete temp file, delete cookies and that sort of thing.
I hope someone has ideas, because I don't want to build this desktop back from scrach. TIA,
Can you restore to an even earlier date? Back before the login problem started. I would be looking at my programs and deciding who the bad guy is. Some pop up blockers are too aggressive for some sites.
I've got it running "system file check" right now. If that doesn't work, I'll try the roll back function. Cookies are all set to interact correctly. My firewall program doesn't block cookies. But I'm having trouble on every site remembering I logged in and that sure seems like an issue with cookie handling. I hope I don't have to rebuild this system from scratch. I'm a packrat for files, photos and software and it takes a long time to put humpty dumpty back.
Are you using IE or Firefox? Personally, I use Firefox and have had much fewer problems with webpage popups and other issues since. (I also use McAfee virus software and firewall - I had Zonealarm for a long while until it gave me an error that wouldn't be resolved - and then I found many other people encountering this problem as well)

I have Firefox, but I mostly use IE6. I didn't try Firefox through this problem but in the past I recall that Firefox was working okay with it's cookies when IE6 was not. There was a time that some sites didn't work right with Firefox. I've not looked into that lately. Firefox does let you see download in progress instead of stalling and leaving you wondering if you're still online. It's a nice package that I probably should use more often.
I ran System File Check, and the symptoms didn't improve. I deleted temporay internet files, cookies and offline stuff.... several times. I tried to roll back like Jim suggested, but there were no rollback points available. That's possibly because this drive was built from a May archive that I saved and restored using Acronis Drive Image 10.
While I was ripping my hair out, the "new JAVA update available" pop-up from SUN appeared, so I gave it a whirl. Now the system seems to be logging into and remembering who I am on various sites. If it's stable a few more days, I'll make an archive of the drive for next time.
All this misery started last week when a power glitch altered my hard drive. Suddenly, the sound card software wasn't working. I uninstalled the sound card software, and when I installed it back, a grabbed the wrong CD that went to a different sound card. It must have been windoz 95 stuff, lol. I need to throw old stuff out, I guess. I still have AMD K6 boards and processors in the basement. When I was done with that "fix", the drive could no longer boot up. All the files were still there with it set as a slave, but windows wouldn't boot after that "creative upgrade". Luckily, I was able to rescue the oven stuffer roaster picture, lol.
Note to self: Buy a new battery for the UPS. A backup power supply should hold the power good for more than 1/2 second.
For your next computer you should seriously consider a Mac.
I resolved my problem down to a barnd new but defective hard disk that had numerous dead sectors. Fortunately, Newegg.com swapped it out for me. Western Digital sent me a "recertified" drive in exchange for the brand new one I had just bought. That struck me as like buying a new plasma TV and getting a recertified tv when the new one is DOA. I sent the recertified drive back and exchanged stuff for a new drive through Newegg. Newegg rocks. I'm happy now; things are working nicely.
I have too much stuff on the system, such as dual monitors, video capture, video surveillance, TV cards, audio capture and whatnot to want to learn how to do all this stuff with Apple.
