Hi all. Name is Chris and I just joined "da groop". My ride is a 68 vert. Originally a verdoro green granny wagon...it's now a little different.
Right now the only thing I need is the straight dope on what's involved with making an A/C car into a non-A/C car with a working defroster so I can get her to pass NH inspection.

Welcome, My '68 was originally A/C equipped but as a child, I pulled everything off from the firewall-foward. I had a cover made for the firewall and used the same heater core. The HVAC box is in tact but aged. With that in mind, my modes all switch as they should and defrosting is not a problem. I must assume you are missing some or most of your HVAC box? The blower comes on, but wont direct to defrost? When you move the lever to defrost, are you feeling any resistance? You may need to remove a few things so you can see what is / isn't happening when you try. I'll bet someone reads this and posts a parts illustration or something that will put it in proper perspective for you. And again, Welcome to our (mostly) happy family.
welcome aboard..... well, for you who dont know what a defroster is, its that thing in an old VW that blows cold air on the inside of the w/s so it freezes up when you breathe, maybe becuase its easier to scrape the ice off from the inside? lol
thats at least how my 58 bug was when I lived in Sweden!
Thanks for the input Greg. The engine side of the A/C heater box is long gone and a plate is now covering the hole in the firewall. I was going to purchase one of these to replace the missing housing. One issue that came up was whether it's possible to replace the dash controls from A/C to non A/C.
Yes NH looks to see if you have a working defroster. I've got everything else functional except that part of the car and it's way frustrating not being able to drive it now.

I saw one of those on eBay (I linked to one in my previous post) and will be buying it soon. I've got a few stray plastic ducts and a missing/wasted duct hose I need to replace and or figure out where they go.
I'm almost tempted to use a DC hairdryer at this point.

luckily , not much need for that in Houston!
When I was growing up our family had four beetles at one time, two '62's, a '63 and a '64. I had to wipe the window for mom while she drove me to school on cold days. Had I known how simple it was to fix, we would have owned VW's a lot longer. The ’64 was the first car I ever drove... up and down the driveway.
Just wait until the winter when there are a lot of board folks hanging out. It will get where someone will hijack a thread that has already been hijacked twice!
Hi Chris We think you will like it here. Alot of good bird owners here and alot of help if you need it. We have a 69 we bought in 74. It was our first car we bought together. We are second owners.
Classic birds all the way! Like Rock and Roll, they're here to stay!
I already do. Any where you can get info on restoring a car is a good place. Was a lot harder to find parts and info way back during the summer of '76 when I was restoring a used up '67 Fairlane GTA on a 16 year-old's budget.
I got into the dash today and found all my linkage connected and funtional. All the door move, etc. Not taking a chance on the heater core so that's getting replaced. Anyone have any nifty tricks on getting the heater box off the inside firewall without doing undo damage to either part in the process?

as for your first issue. you can switch the controls to a non a/c unit if you wish. i don't think you'd have a problem with anything as far as conversion wise. as for removing the heater housing you kinda have to remove the fender if you don't want to damage anything. some here have cut access hole into the inner fender and install a backing lip behind the cut out panel and re-installed the cut out. as for removal, if you don't want to remove the fender and the kids like to wrench on the car with you set them in the engine bay with a 1/4" rachet set and point to the bolt you need them to take off. its easier for them to reach in their than for you to stick your klods in there getting them caught in the process!

I was able to remove the inner box without too much chaos. Broke off one plastic mounting tab but other than that, no damage. I will definitely be removing the fender to get to what's left of the A/C housing as the last of that is still there, broken away many years ago from it's other part. Unfortunately, I have to interrupt playtime for a work-related trip out to Cali.
I hate having to be an adult.

lol... its definately easier being a kid! you can mooch off the parents, not pay any d@m bills cause there the parents bag and you can buy whatever you choose cause all the money your making is yours! on the other hand it bl0ws being the parents for the same reason cept your always giving the kids your cash, you pay all there bills cause they blow there cash on crap and never get anything done!
