I have a '69 Firebird with a 400 HO 4 speed alum muncie, fact Hurst, custom molded int with folding rear seat, & many more extras & odd Factory parts. How can I find out how many cars were produced similiar to mine. I've owned this '69 since 1985 but I never looked into it's history or really cared. I was to busy driving the hell out it and loving every minute of it. Now I'm older & somewhat wiser?..What do I have, and is it worth as much as my heart says it is.
Yep, the PHS documents will tell all. One of the best things to have owning a Pontiac, and at $50.00, well worth the price. Some now balk at the price of a packet of paper, but that packet tells ya everything ya want to know.
One thing it won't tell you is if it's a special dealer custom package like the "Comanche"...but it does list the selling dealer, and you can continue the search in dealer records if they can be found.

Thanks for the info. This really cool. People who love firebirds as much as I do. My bird also has a power steering cooler, something else I've never seen on another Firebird. I bought a 1969 service manual which covers all Pontiacs that year and it shows that it was a factory installed option. Rare? Doesn't' look like it would do much except add volume to the power steering pump.
As it's strapped to the top tank of the radiator, a little heat can be transferred from the power steering fluid to the coolant. Not like a later model finned design, but it helps.
Power steering cooler was not a common option.

Thanks for the info, I keep finding out more uncommon things about my car. I'll post some photos soon. Nothin' fancy yet, just primer grey until I can afford to do it once & do it right.
I have alot more questions. One of them is about the rear end in my 69. A while back when I would spin the tires one tire would spin then about 8 to 10 feet later both tires would smoke leaving perfect burnout tracks. Now my car is a one wheel wonder. What happened & can it be easily fixed? I have some additive from the local pontiac dealer for the rear end. Is this the cure-all? Hard to believe it would be that simple. Help...
Now my car is a one wheel wonder. What happened & can it be easily fixed?
The additive prevents binding in the safe-t-track. It won't help once the frictions are worn out. Assuming your differential is now a peg-leg because the cones are worn out, the fix would be to replace the carrier with a new one from Auburn or Eaton. It's an expensive part and an expensive job to have done.
That's assuming your recollections of dual tire marks are correct. You could check out the axle codes on the left center of the axle tube to check that your car has a safe-t-track. I don't know if there are rebuild kits for the original when the cones are shot. I don't recall seeing them for sale. There was an article I read online about milling the end of the cones to get more use of what remains, but I think that may be wishful thinking on a part long past it's useful life.
Thanks. I'll check out the axle codes but I'm positive about the duel tracks I used to leave. I have to fix it, get it right. Bring the bird back to all it's glory. Besides it's much more fun leaving Mustangs in twice the smoke...
My open 3:23 rear would leave dual tracks with a particular set of older Cooper tires. Kinda wierd, really. Wouldn't do that with the Goodrich T/A's. There is nothing "wrong" with your rear end...nothing to fix.
I'm a hobbyist. Not a professional. Don't be hatin'!
I found the axle code and to be trueful I was a little disapointed.. I found 104 YF. "YF" meaning STD. What you say about tires may be the key. I used to have a set of Goodyear Eagle ST's that were big and tall,. They smoked for-ever. Now I have Dunlop Qualifier HR4's that grip and go but I can only get one to spin. What does the "104" mean?
