I have a problem that I was wondering if anyone else had. My car cuts off when i drive it, and then when i shift to neutral it comes back on. It backfires and blows the muffler out. I believe it is an ignition problem.
seriously though, i dont know. check/replace your points and condenser. repace the cap and rotor. plugs and wires dont hurt while your doing the rest. set the dwell. set your timing.
2x check the two wires on your ignition coil. I goofed one time and swap them. Ran kinda of rough, but drivable, then died when someone pulled next to me to race. 15yrs ago. Very embarrasing. That's why I remember.
Yes, it sounds like it may be that the wires are mixed up on the coil? Kind of fails to advance etc... Let us know!
How come you took the pertronix off? I've just been looking for that and was going to put them on? Did you have any problems? If not were you going to sell it? I'd be interested if you do... if you don't put it back on that is.

I liked the electronic part but they have a micro switch built in where if it detects a problem it shuts off. Im wondering if my resister wire may be going bad from the starter to the coil. Gonna replace it this weekend along with the coil and new points.
I have the Pertronix 1181LSCC, works like a champ. But I recall the instructions saying to feed the coil from a 12V supply, not through the resistor wire. What is your coil primary to ground voltage? If less than 11 volts that may be the problem. The points work with resistance (wires or ballast resistor) but not Pertronix.

You can't use resistor wire with pertronix. Take it off the coil and put 12v from the ignition and then start it. Mine works great also, never skips a beat.....Pete
Does the engine cut back in only when you shift back to neutral? And at exactly the same time? Can you make it quit by moving the shifter while in drive?
