I thought it would be interesting and informative to get your opinions on this. I have had one personal observation to add; No matter how far from shore or how deep you fish there aren't any Perch to be found in Lake Huron.
My theory: Just like climate change, the levels of all lakes are cyclical. I recalled Lake Michigan being at a low level several years ago so I searched for historic data. First, Lake Superior is currently 2" higher than they recorded back in 1926 and all the other lakes are several inches above their low level records.
Good point. They said it would have to lower another three inches this year to beat that 80 year old record. I guess it's premature to get into any serious worrying until that record is broken(at least). I think the scientists are concerned with the raising temps of the lakes. I can think of one theory on this right off the top of my head. I'm mostly familiar with Lake Huron. In the last decade we have had a 'bloom' in the population of zebra muscles. These creatures do a great job of cleaning the water. The water is so clear now you can see the bottom even when it's over 20 feet deep. The bottom of the lake, when the sunlight can reach it, acts like a solar panel. This will warm it to some extent. Also, there has been less ice cover due to global warming or some other reason. Meaning that there are more days each year that the lakes do not have a covering of ice. When there's ice the sunlight is reflected. When they aren't covered you get that solar panel effect.
intersting thing is the "alarmists" always say "this breaks a 50 yr record, a 80 yr record or 120 yr record", but all that means it was like that or very close to it "back when"...
as Al Gore says in his movie (and lots of scientists do too): temperature is rising because of CO2 levels are... but who can say thats true? maybe its like "some other" scientists say : the the CO2 levels are rising because of temperature is?
if they correspond, b/c both can be proven...its just what "most" can sell and benefit from...

I liked the one in the comments about a crack in the bottom of the lake. The water runs down there and will eventually turn to steam and blow!!! The twilight zone I was refering to was Edgar Casey's proficies.....
I do have some more conventional thoughts to add but I'm doing a little research first.
The dang cormorants are eating all the perch since they can readily see schools in the clear water. Get rid of the cormorants and the panfish will come back.

i remember when all the fish were being washed ashore in lake ontario.millions of dead fish and the lake stunk terrybly
Terry, you must remember the alewives. I remember walking along the shore of Lake Michigan in the 60s when those things were washed up in a pile a few feet wide and a few inches thick and running as far as you could see. They had no predators, multiplied fast but lived only 3-4 years before they die and wash ashore. The stocking of the Great Lakes with salmon helped control them. Made some nice salmon fishing too.
