I have a 1968 68 400 with 400 Trans the Reverse lights do not turn on. All fuses are good. Where should I start looking.? The bulbs are new so thats been X'ed out as a possibiity.
Does the '68 have the back-drive linkage like a 69? If so, make sure it's there, and working. If so, check out the neutral start switch. Should be somewhere on the top of the column, down by the firewall.
the picture at the bottom of this page http://1968firebird.org/illustrated/acclink/acclink1.html says all 69-67 have the same setup, slightly differing depending on transmission. i've never messed with mine, so i'm not much help. that page also says it is for floor shift with std trans. i couldn't find one for auto. it's probly the same. or maybe it's in the tranny?
there is also a wiring diagram on that site. it shows a lime green wire going from the bulbs to the backup switch, and powered by the same wire as the flasher, out of the fuse box. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ sometime later that day...
If the set-up is the same for '67-'69, then I would bet the back-drive linikage has been removed. Try slowly turning the outer case of the steering column counter-clockwise (from the driver's seat) while someone watches the lights to see if they come on. They should.
67/68 are different than the 69, in that there is no locking mechanism for the ignition, and would have no back drive linkage.
There will be a switch located at the shifter, that will control the NS, and the back up lights. (And I bet if I go to the illustrattions on Steves site that Scott posted it should be there, just haven't looked yet) But it should be a switch that you can test, and or make sure it's even hooked up?
I bet it's a loose wire there or the switch? Always the simple things...
