The Bird is finally road-ready but I'm having a difficult time finding an insurer. I was going to use American Travelers but it seems to not be available anymore. I want full coverage that will allow me to drive often and that does not require a locked garage. It is in a carport and is covered. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks
Both Haggarty Ins. and Grundy Ins. require you have a garage. I have my convertible in the garage fully covered by Haggerty Ins since the bank still carries the note. My coupe has to play second fiddle and sit out under a cover all the time. It has a clear title and I just carry a liable police with American Family Ins. If it's wrecked it wound more than likely be totaled out.
When I lived in CA I had Hagerty and all I had was a car port. I called them and they were very helpful and had some suggestions etc. and ultimately insured our bird. The resolution was an active alarm had to be installed, the car had to be off street and parked in the same spot nightly (very close to OUR condo). They also required that I place a "club" on the wheel nightly. Providing all of these measures were taken and pics taken to show compliance, they insured the car. Now I do beleive they did charge me a bit more than if I had a garage, nonetheless I did not care as I needed the car to be insured. Call them and see if there are options. Now in my case I had been with them up to that point for a few years, so maybe that made a difference?
can you put doors on the carport? is it yours(the carport?) you can enclose it maybe? add some posts ,texture 111 or similar , try to get a used garage door...maybe someone is tearing down a house somewhere?
I guess I could enclose it but it would be a chore. It isn't a flimsy carport but a 3 stall shed built with a metal roof, concreted-in uprights and enclosed with fence and metal cattle panels. It's inside my yard which is inside our fenced pasture in a secluded area complete with a guard dog. I guess you've probably figured out that we live on a farm. I collect cars and have some waiting to be restored or used as parts. I have another 5 stall shed (which is full) attached to a small barn.
I would call Grundy and explain your situation. They are very understanding and flexible. They don't try to pull any 'fancy footwork' when you try to claim either.
Well I've checked with several companies and without a locked, completely enclosed garage I can't qualify for classic insurance. The alternative is to insure it as a daily driver for an Agreed Value which raises the premium substantially. One company quoted $500 a year so for the time being I will only carry liability on it. I see garage-building in my future.
here is what i have 25k for 69 firebird 400 conv 20k for 69 firebird 400 hardtop 20k for 79 trans am 10k for 85 trans am convt 5k for 71 le mans 400
i just paid 500 for the year. unlike all the others, they dont have to be garaged, and my kids can drive them to car shows. mileage under 2,500 year. they came and did eval on car, and that was it. AAA now has classic insurance here in so cal.
