Hey guys. I just bought a very rough 1968 Firebird coupe from original owner. It's been sitting in a barn since 1981. Only (significant) rust is in floors and a little in the rear window channel. All the interior/exterior colors and accessories match the fisher tag...but It also has a "yw" motor with original 7028264 xe carb. Could it be a real HO car??? No aftermarket parts anywhere. What do you think?

The YW is the '68 400HO automatic engine code. Look to see if the VIN on the front of the engine matches the vehicle VIN.

Is it next the "yw" or in another spot? I thought they didn't match engines to the cars in '68.

The VIN is on the engine in '68. It is difficult to see. You can find it on the milled surface under the radiator hose connection to the engine. This shows the location: http://www.teufert.net/identify/identify.htm

Thanks Jim!!!
I just checked the 6 digits to the left of the waterpump housing and they match the last 6 on the vin. Thanks so much, you made my day.

Now you may want to order the PHS (Pontiac Historical Services) documentation to see the complete record of the build for your car.

With the YW, you have 1 of 684 made.

I just did. Now I'll be anxiously awaiting the rest of the info. If I'm reading the info right, there were only 684 of these made with 400HO and turbo 400 transmission. It's a YY paint code with white parchment interior. How long have to owned your HO?

Wow...that's pretty great. This will be my 4th firebird, but the best find yet. Im not sure if I should try to re-sell it or put "a lot" of money into a restoration.

That sounds like a great find. Please post some pictures when you can. Finding one of these cars with the original engine is a big plus.

Jim has a very nice car and is a good source for Firebird information.

That's about right. At this point, I'll have mine until I'm room temperature.

One guy here (in Illinois - not on the 1st Gen Forum) bought his '68 new in December '67 so he has had his even longer than me.

not sure how far you got on pictures...but first step is having them on a location you can browse , like on"my pictures" on your computer , or photobucket or such...then you go below this reply/ post: square, then you`ll see "markup", below it"poll manager", then "File manager" ,thats where you browse and add pics

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure.
