I thought I would share some photos of a re-molded or re-casted 68 deluxe steering wheel that I just acquired. It was restored by Dennis at www.qualityrestorations.com

Their process is quite involved. Below I copied their details. They are expensive but the quality is real nice. I think they run around 1200.00-1400.00. It's been awhile since I contacted him and I cant find exactly how much they were. I lucked up and purchased this off of eBay. It had never been installed since it was restored.


This is a general description of my recast process. Each steering wheel is different in design and structure thus requiring it's own specific procedure.

I remove all of the old plastic, bead blast the frame and paint it the same color as the plastic. Through my proprietary process, I cast on a specially formulated thermoset UV stable plastic in the original configuration without loss of the original detail. The plastic does not shrink, crack, turn yellow or change colors.

The steering wheel frame is placed into the appropriate mold. The clear liquid urethane is tinted to the desired color and added to the mold. Upon completion of the curing process, the plastic is heat treated, sanded and polished. The color is uniform throughout the plastic and the finished product is polished plastic, not a painted wheel. The molded plastic is one complete casting, there are no joints.

Price and turn around times vary. Certain wheels include matching gear shift and turn signal knobs. For the continental US, there is a return shipping charge of $20 - $40 which includes $1000.00 of insurance. Wow! Nice wheel. Great deal! His process looks to be the best out there, however, it would seem to me that it would be less labor intensive to do his process. Why does he need $1400 to do that wheel? I will try and get a quote for my cores.

He quoted me $1200 a few months ago.

That makes the $400 repop wood wheel not look so expensive

Cleaned up the trim and now it looks pretty new.

Did you just clean or were coatings or paint applied?

I lightly sanded the pits out and sprayed with argent silver paint and satin clear. I thought about sending them to the chrome shop but this turned out pretty good. I may put it off for a little while and see how this holds up.

Good idea on the trim, I may try doing the silver in a powder coat...I am just working on mine....
