The hollow brass stud under that ring has a copper spring under/inside it that keeps it in contact with the ring. I just pulled mine out last night. Had to dissassemble and "extend" that copper spring. Its very soft. I hope this repair lasts.

You must have jumped that stud to get a spark. The ring has no juice unless that stud is touching it..I think...
