Another spot it could be but not on our FGF's is above the accelerator pedal on the linkage. They were there on the GTO's & Chevelles in the late 60's, early 70's.
Easy to check but if yours isn't gearing down likely not there.
The accel rod pushes the round tube to the left & down in this pic. and actuates the switch.
