Hi all, we just fired the engine on my '67 resto project tonight for the FIRST time! Yikes! You never know how things will go, right? Overall, it went pretty well (still recovering from the monoxide lol)... She fired right up thanks to my patented carb priming technique (lol)....But now I'm praying that the awesome FirstGen crowd can shave a bunch of time off of my 4 issues, because let's face it, we've all had the same problems over and over, right? Please feel free to check out my pics, and jump in if you have any input on any of the issues!
1. BROWN GOO!!! There is a TON of brown goo in the water system. It seems to have the consistency of whipped cream, only a cardboard color! Kinda smells similar to a machine shop/engine shop (my buddy says this)- if that makes sense- chemically smelling. We bought the motor half assembled, and did go through it, so I know it was not paper, or anything stuffed in motor as we went through it pretty solidly. Seemed very good and was all fresh machining. Has anyone experienced this stuff? Oil on dipstick is clean, the goo is not in motor oil so far. Oil is perfect, thank god. Can the goo be flushed?
2. Voltage issue- When engine runs, battery holds solid at 12.2v when probed directly on terminals. Running or not, 12.2v either way. The battery is clearly not charging. However, the fuse box taps (male accessory terminals, etc) all show anywhere from 12 to 16 volts depending on RPM, and the intensity of the light bulbs in the car also verify this increase. Therefore, the alternator is clearly making voltage, but it's not actually reaching the battery itself. So I took the voltage reg out of my other 67 and swapped- same problem exactly- it didn't fix it. I should note, that I spent a ton of time on all the wiring harnesses, checking each carefully and re-taping completely. The harnesses on my car were not chopped up in any way, so you have to trust me that all wires are accounted for, and in nice shape. I guess I'm trying to say they are all in very good condition, and everything on the car down to the glove box light works with the exception of this charging issue. Could it be a fusible link be blown at the reg? For some reason, the alternator voltage is just not hitting the battery, and there seems to be too much voltage at high RPM at the fuse box! Argh.... Hmm....
3. Tranny is dead. By dead I mean there is no attempt to shift into gear when engine running. i suspect the pump, because I did verify that the pan had 3.5 qts in it when I started. There was no change on the stick- so clearly the converter is not hydraulically locking up, or filling up. Pump? Yes there is a filter, and yes the o-ring is intact, etc.
4. Repro hood tach is no joy- the light works at least, all wires correctly applied- negative coil, ignition 12v, and chassis ground. Any ideas? Could it be I'm using an MSD blaster (round) style coil, and not an actual factory coil? All 3 wires connected per manual.... I think- what little manual it came with- a torn piece of paper!
Thank you so much for helping any way you can. BTW, what is the best way to get pics up here? Dropbox? I'll just link to them below so you can get a feel for where my car is at..
