First problem sounds like it may be a vacuum leak. Reset both the idle mixture screws to carb maker's specification, usually 2-4 turns out from lightly seated. Check the carb base bolts, replace the base gasket if the carb has been removed, then check or temporarily plug EVERY vacuum line at the carb or manifold. If you can then control your idle, check to ensure your distributor vacuum advance is on ported, not manifold, vacuum. Reconnect each vacuum line one at a time until the problem recurs. Most likely candidates are brake booster hose or grommet, PCV hose or grommet, or transmission vacuum modulator.
Check clearance between your hood and your ignition system and wiring harnesses. If you can install an air cleaner and close the hood, then you have plenty of clearance for the carb air.
