I tried doing a search of this info, but I couldn't find what I was looking for. Im in the process of getting new tires on the rally IIs and I wanted to know what the correct sizes s/b for them. This is for a 69 bird, 350-V8, vert... the rims are the correct coded 14x7s.
Any recommendations?
Im going to Goodyear tomorrow and Id like to get as close to original as possible, or, at least get a nice original looking radial for these. This car will be for casual Sunday driving, not racing or long distances.
If you want the same size all around, anything in a 235 would fit without rubbing on a car at stock height. Some can make 245 fit but they would rub on my stock car....
The original tires were F70=14 Bias Ply(non radial), I believe. I don't know what the cross over size would be in todays numbers but I would think a 195 or 205/70/14 would be close. Good luck.
Sounds like anything in the 195-235/70/14 range, bias ply or radial, would fit my car. I don't want any rub issues, so I think that gives me a pretty good range to work with. Now we'll see what the store has on sale that looks good.
I looked at the tires over lunch...wow...what a difference between the 195-235 in regards to heighth and width... Given the fact that I don't want any issues with rubbing and want as close an original look as possible...Im going with the 195/70R-14s..blackwall..
I've got 205-70-14's on my 14X6 rims and they fit fine. I believe they are equivalent to F70-14's that were the bigger stock tires available originally (most cars came with E70's). My 205's look kind of small on the car. 195's would look even wimpier. I would recommend at least 205's.
The metric size equivalent for the E-70 is a P205/70R14. The equivalent for the F-70 is the P215/70R14. I have P225/70R14 BFG's on my cammer. I do get some rubbing on irregular grade changes like steep aprons. No other problems with regular driving.
I have 215/70R14 on 14x6 all around. I looked at several combos on other Firebirds/camaros at local cruises and got feedback form others (as you are doing) before deciding. Seeing them in person was key for my decision. I think they look great and easily out perform my setup (stock). No rubbing at all.
My rims are 14x7s, and the car currently looks as though it sits lower then normal. (I think the prior person might have lowered the stance a bit). The tires that are on it right now are 195s and they look fine, not wimpy at all. Ive had other cars in the past that had slightly bigger tires and at times they rubbed. I don't want any problem with rubbing, and the difference between 195s and 205s weren't that drastic when I had them side by side...not compared to the 235s I was looking at. Plus, the 195s are quite a bit cheaper and easier to find then the larger sizes. For now...they should be good enough. This car is for simple Sunday cruising, not racing or trying to impress the neighborhood teenagers. If I want bigger, meatier down the road, I can always upgrade..
Just to keep it balanced here for those who like a bigger tire(as big as they can get without rubbing). I have 14 x 7's, 235's, stock height(very close) and stock springs/suspension. After a few thousand miles they haven't rubbed yet. Take a look;

That 'bird looks sure looks familiar.
When this pic was taken I still had P215/70R14's on factory 14x7 Rallys. My convertible also sits 2" lower than stock.
Hey Jim, What's the back spacing on your rims? And, are those 235/60 series tires? I'm still trying to figure out what size tire and wheel I can get away with.

215/70-14. This fits 7 inch rims good, and equals the F70-14 orig specs. 195 or 205 looks a little skinny on the rims imo. Currently i have BFG 225/70-14 on mine, no rubbing, but a little too much black sidewall. If you want to show the white lettering it is another story though.... Thinking of buying BFG 215/70-14 redlines.......
