Hi all. I'm new to the forum. A little aggrevated. Been working on the firebird all week trying to get this rear end changed. Finally got full tooth imprints from the pinion and 7 thousandths of backlash, think all is going well, go to put the yoke on and the stupid yoke is for the original 27 spline pinion instead of the new 25 spline pinion. Anywhoooo... looking into that thanks to some help over on the parts wanted. My biggest fear is that the new pinion gear kit is going to require a newer yoke out of something like a 1970ish, but it was my only option to get the higher gear, ya know? I just want to get this bird finished (all done otherwise) so I can sell it. But I wanted to say hi to everyone. From West Virginia. Opening our new auto repair shop in July!
Welcome aboard! Hey, you might want to find out the application for the parts you installed in that rear end. If you have that then finding the right splined yoke will be a whole lot easier....
Welcome to the club-bub. If you have the yoke in front of you, go to www.powertrainindustries.com and I'll bet they would help. Otherwise it would be a matter of getting the proper yoke to fit the pinion shaft, based on what it was produced for. BTW, I'v got people in Louisa KY, right at the WV line. I also run my dad's repair shop, so we got lots in common.
Just want to sellt his one so we can get a different one, that's all. As for application, don't quite undrstand?
What I meant by 'application' was what the parts came from you are using. If new, what 'application' or car type they were sold for. For example, we have BOP 8.2 10 bolts. Another common one is 8.5 Corporate 10 bolt.
Nah, I just don't drink enough beer while working to forget it all. And what I don't know, I know where to look or who to ask.
And why would you hate to say it? There's nothing that makes cars a "guy thing" exclusively. I just have a fair amount of mechanical ability and a fairly good recollection for stuff I've dealt with before. That's not gender specific by any means.
Just don't ask me about "domestic arts" as I don't have a clue...

Ahh. Parts were new. Ordered them from Transtar, asked for highest gear ratio for a BOP. He sent me parts for GM. That's what screwed me up. Had a great convo with Terry, and in the end, decided to follow his advice and return the ring and pinion and put the 355 that was in there back.
See, when Beav got this car, the rear end had been upped to the 355 already. All well and good, except the guy who did the installation shouldn't be anywhere near a car because he put the seals in backwards (springs out), which pushed the seal right up against the crush ring, which of course caused major melting. Shoot, the axle seals were chewed up bad too. Same thing, put together backwards. So I had to get the bearing and seal kit anyway for this new ring and pinion, so I'm going to keep it. I'm going to try and return the parts to transtar, and if I can't, just sell them on ebay or something to try and recoup my moolah. Since there wasn't any damage or anything to the old ring and pinion, they're fine. Should be on the road again by tomorrow.
