Hi Guys, I'm looking at what appears to be an original Sprint 6 convertible 4 speed car. How to I tell if it is genuine? I have the VIN and the body tag.
Look just behind the oil filler tube on the passenger side of engine. Look for the flat pad between the head and block which pertrudes out just enough to see the 1/4" letter/numbers stampings.
The partial VIN is stamped along a vertical pad adjacent to the bottom bell housing bolt on the passenger side of the block. The block code is on the block surface adjacent to the head behind the oil filler tube.
Thanks guys. I'll be looking at it tomorrow evening. It's a 1968 'Sprint' Convertible, 4-Speed, power top, standard interior, 120K miles, verdura green, black interior and top, manual drum brakes. I have the VIN and the body tag. So is the ZD on the engine VIN the only way to tell without doing a PHS? Thanks. Dave
Thanks again! Would this be a very rare combination? It appears to be in great shape from the pics except for some rust around the rear wheel wells and the trunk lid around the Pontiac letters. the car comes with new quarters and a new trunk lid. he wants $11,000 firm. Sound fair? Thanks again. dave
I recently bought a comparable 400 4 speed '68 convertible for a couple thou less. Sprints are a lot of fun, but don't command exceptionally strong market pricing at present.

$11,000 is on the high end. With the rust you describe I wouldn't go over $8,000. And with economy the way it is, folks are taking a hit trying to sell. So ya may get a deal if he's willin' to.
He came down to $10K. Not sure what to do. I haven't seen anything comperable in that price range locally or on EBAY. I'd rather have one with a V8.....decisions decisions.....
OK. I ended up buying the car. Still not certain if it is an original Sprint or not. If it isn't, everything has been added. It has the limited slip rear with 3.55 gears, the correct intake and exhaust manifold, 4 speed, emblems, etc. Everything else matches the body tag as original as well. The engine partial VIN matches the vehicle VIN. The only thing that I can't figure out is the block code. Is the block code on the side of the block between the oil dipstick tube and the transmission bell housing? If so, it appears that it is ND. That doesn't match anything that I can find on the web for codes. It has an 'N' and then a little bump on the block and then a 'D'. The center section of the block has '9790043' stamped on the side. Any ideas guys??? Also, how do I ID what exact 4-speed it has? Thanks again! Dave EDIT..... I was looking next to the dipstick on the block instead of the 'oil filler tube' and up by the head. It is in fact a 'ZD' block. very cool! I'm glad that it is in fact 'numbers matching'! Thanks again! Dave

Good to hear ya got a little bit off the asking price. Best thing for ya to do now is get the PHS documents for the car. Most Sprints and OHC-6 came with a 3spd manual trans unless ordered with a 4spd. Post some pics!
Thanks Guys! Pretty sure that it came with a 4-speed. Definitely gonna do the PHS. I need to do it on all three of my birds! Here are some pics that I took this evening. Dave
Sweet! It's nice to see another L-6 under the hood. You'll find it's an attention getter at car shows, and may see a lot of finger pointing with, "I didn't know Pontiac had a six cylinder."
