A registry to document all First Generation Firebirds as they originally came from the factory. Everyone should contribute whether you still have car or not, or whether it is original or not to help the greater Firebird community for future research.

You need as little as your vin and cowl tag to get started. Go to the registry via this link. There is a good description of the goals there.
/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=23;t=001701

This thread is intended to be a list of names of people who want to help John and Geoff with data entry and website design for information that has already been collected over the years or that needs to be collected or organized (pictures, etc.) This is not a list of everyone who has input their data into the registry site form, a separate post could be started for that(sorry if there was confusion earlier). This is a place for John and Geoff to quickly find volunteers.

John Schuh and Geoff Martin will need our help as it is a large task. They will let the mailing list know when they are at a point which the help will be useful. Place your name here by replying to this message if willing to help along with your email address

I will help.
Scott

This registry has been around for years. I would really like to see some of the RESULTS of this registry. I remember way back when the registry was going to report but no such thing has happened. Is this just a way for someone to find rare cars and buying them off unsuspecting people or is there some purpose for this registry. Like reporting how many of a car are around?

John lives in Michigan, Geoff in Florida..You live in TX.

Just curious..Who are you in relation to them and your connection to the registry?

I see a recent member registration...your post has me somewhat clouded.

I am the web programmer making it possible to share the information. John and I have talked for several years on how we can make information available but protect confidentiality of it. It has been our main concern as it is most people's concern to conceal the VIN. The online entry process was the start but my move to Florida stopped further database programming last year.

Until we started move to a web database for all new entries, all we had were flat files for John to research and publish statistics via email. A lot of these can be found in the FAQs and come up on the Firebird-L Mailing List. We still will need to find a way to move this existing data into the online database as it will not be easy.

With the big move adjustments out of way now for my family and getting adjusted to my new job responsibilities, I am ramping up the programming to enable database research. This has been reason for renewed activity and interest.

We had not publicized the web site and not made it easy to find as we wanted to provide a few updates first. Specifically, ability for all to research data for statistics on options and ability to modify and add data to your personal entry. These are my first focus and with a little programming luck, should be available in next 60 days max. My day job is still taking 6 out of 7 days.

Only motive I have is the challenge of making this happen and quest for more information. I am an information junky and want to find a way to solve some of the mysteries. John is person analyzing data up to this point and I am the programmer.

Scott has been in contact with me directly and John as he is also and information junky. He had not contacted us until recently and has been very interested in helping with the data research and entry process. You need to thank him for lighting the fire to get me excited about programming for this again.

Ultimately, the registry will include tie ins with a part database (to be developed), FAQs ( http://FirstGenFirebird.org/firebird/FAQ/ ), and literature database ( https://firstgenfirebird.org/dtb/ ).

Also, the more information we gather (Car Data, Dealer Tech Bulletins, documents, etc...) the more reliable the data becomes and more we can share.

I am always looking for more documentation as I only have gathered a small portion available. A lot of these documents are in your hands waiting to be shared.

Geoff,

Sorry for the callous inquery. This initial registry post just seemed out of the norm with the ebb and flow and with a member who registered recently.

It got me suspicious and was about to email you wondering if someone was infiltrating all of your and Johns research. Also thought someones intent was in ill favor.

By the way, I have an issue with ordering tshirts and a few hats...I will try again tonight.

Tom

I understand.

Let me know what issue you are having as I just put a test order though and could not get an error. Would explain why activity stopped.

I edited the first post for clarity. If anyone indicated their interest in data entry help (mass of data already collected, not your personal data) on the Firebird list but not here please do so here so they can find volunteers quickly.

Here is the essence of the changes.

"This thread is intended to be a list of names of people who want to help John and Geoff with data entry and website design for information that has already been collected over the years or that needs to be collected or organized (pictures, etc.) This is not a list of everyone who has input their data into the registry site form, a separate post could be started for that(sorry if there was confusion earlier). Tom , Scott is just "late" registering here,....he`s been a 'lurker' for some time....yesterday he posted an old post from the list that was 5 yrs old ( looks like he`s been saving them all...)....thats long before I looked up FGF on the web.... smile

I`m sure Scott is not taking any offense to you questioning his 'recent' registration.....he`s just a guy who wants to help out... wink

Comments from John on the Firebird list

From: <[email protected]>
To: "First Generation Firebird-L" <[email protected]>

Subject: Re: [FGF] any interest in the registry

> First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List
> ........................................................................
> The 67-69 Firebird Registry is open to all current and former Firebird
owner's.
> All cars are welcome... restored, modified, parts-cars or even a VIN from
a car you once owned (or junked). Condition is not important as this is not
intended to be simply a collection of owner photo's. Also, for this data to
be of any use, we need more than... "I have a red '68 Firebird with a 4spd".
This is why we specify the need for a VIN, Trim Tag codes and any
factory/dealer documentation you may have along with a description of the
car.
>
> In addition to the Registry Database, there are several research projects
that use this information to provide more detail on everthing relating to
the 67-69 Firebirds. Listed below are the major indexes for the Registry:
>
> 1) Identification Numbers (VIN, Body Unit, Engine unit, etc)
> 2) Part Identification (photos, part numbers, casting numbers)
> NOTE: This area could be broken down according to the PMD
> Part Group System (0.000 -thru- 15.000) or according to TCF
> (Trim, Chassis, Final w/sub-groups within each)
> 3) Trim Tag Decoding
> 4) Broadcast Copy & Billing History Decoding (documentation)
> 5) Options (photos, Sales Codes, usage, variations, etc)
> 6) Date Coding
> 7) Production Build Procedures (Assembly Manual)
> 8) Production Identification Marks
> 9) Production Build Variations, Mid-year Changes
> 10) Production Totals
> 11) Restoration Techniques (paint, body, detailing)
> 12) Mechanical Reference Index (drivetrain rebuild techniques)
> 13) Research Index (on-going research of Firebird variations)
> 13) Owner Registry (photos, vehicle profile index, etc)....
>
> The subject of a 67-69 Firebird Restoration/Reference Guide has been
brought up before on this List. Unfortunately, despite the offers from
several people to help out, the project never took off. The first thing we
need are people interested in helping out. Once we have a dedicated group,
then we establish the plan and responsibilities. All of us are busy and have
other lives besides our cars. To make this a success, we'll need people who
have experience with various computer software and web-page design. We'll
also need people with organization skills to collect and arrange
information, photos, references, etc.
>
> I can put together a detailed, preliminary plan for the group to review
and critique. From there, we start collecting the info and putting it into
the formats required for a web-site. Many thanks to Geoff for this List and
his help with formatting/uploading the Registry Forms. He is also very
organized and has several suggestions as to how this information could be
presented.
>
> So, without going on further in this post, I'll wait and see how many
offers and suggestions we get over the next week or so.

Any more volunteers to help with the registry?

Most likely data entry, web work, taking pictures , organizing to assist Geoff and John.

If you think you might like to help list your name here.

John or Geoff willl be in touch soon when they are ready for this volunteer effort to get kicked off.

Just an update. I have put together most of the "update" documents or "add" documents section for your entries. I ended the weekend before I could be sure it all worked properly. Looking at my schedule for next month, I may not get a chance to finish all little details (icons, testing, and couple bug fixes) for several more weeks.

Once complete with previous, working on solution for reviewing data in "secure environment" so VIN in forms viewable as **** only. This will enable process for using volunteers to enter the flat files into the database. Will also finally include search features needed for proper research and data crunching which John needs. Will keep posted on progress.
