Wow, what a topic! I'll add a few more of my two cents worth then I think I'm done. Whether taxing the higher incomes is fair or not, I personally don't mind giving up more if I have enough to live on. How much money does one really need to have? Happiness alone does not come from money. I would be happy to give a higher share if I know it's helping someone out. If my taxes go to irresponsible spending, no I'm not happy with that.
Here is a couple of websites that people might find intersting. FactCheck.org is a non-partisan fact finder on different subjects but especially about candidates statements and politic ads right now.

You're free to give away your money at anytime. In fact I encourage everyone that thinks it's ok to take from those that have and give to those that have-not to give til it hurts. That your right. It just not right to force people to give to support those that won't do the hard work hard work it takes to maintain a decent lifestyle. I give quite a bit to my church and local charities, I don't need the government making the decision for me who to give to.
People that ask "How much money does one really need to have?" really chap my a$$. Its none of your business how much money a person thinks they need as long as we live in a free society. You just worry about your own conscience and let others worry about theirs.
Well, I thought I was done but it's too tempting to not say something. You do have a good point. Should the government make that decision to give to others or should it be left to each individual? I don't think tax cuts given to people that make less should be considered as not working hard. I think there are many who do work extremely hard but just get paid less for it.

thanks saw it...John McC has a hard time convincing her...see he face!? thats because she doesnt believe him I dont either , in that segment...but he`s talking about pregressive tax, which we DO have... by the way I`m for a change of the entire system! but we DO have a progressive system ,which is not a prefered system ,esp as you see when he refers to Sweden ,as I have...it has no incentive...humans need incentives...
to say, I have what I need and lets give the rest to someone else is admirable, but it does not provide much for you OR the people you give to...as you see, when prople say that, they have verey little 'drive' to start with ,and wont have much to give...the people with big drive, will get lots more done, will hgire others , make everything work...people in the first category ,very rarely create jbs for others..
heres another clip, long , 12 minutes, but its the Terminator...telling a story very close to mine,.,, he also left europe 40 years ago, for a reason...

this hits close to home as one time I was part of a law suit and the opposite side lawywer asked how much insurance I had.....he already had my income statement, and you know what he was fishing for!... I told him I had none....he hasked why...I told him I couldnt afford it.... he said :"with that income I cannot see how you cannot afford it?:"
I asked him how HE could tell ME what I could afford or not, thats MY decision to make! he shut up.

I don't mean to pick on your personally, but your original comment indicated you felt that people that make more money should be paying *more* taxes than they are already paying. They are already paying more now! Not just in dollar amount but percentage. How much taxes should the rich pay? 40%, 50%, 70%? What would be enough? Doesn't that take away any incentive to to excel? I'm all for lower taxes that's for sure. If the government didn't waste our money on silly entitlements, welfare, and bailouts we would probably be in great shape. I wish I were making a lot more than I do but its just fact of a free society that some people are going to make a lot and some aren't. I don't hold it against those people though and don't feel its right to punish them for their success.

Sheri, FactCheck.org is Annenberg. (Look at their title on the website.) Barack Hussein Obama was Chairman of the Board of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, which was a Division, or Project, of the Annenberg Foundation. Note that he served with his SDS/Weather Underground domestic terrorist friend William Ayers. Obama requested a $3 million pork earmark for Annenberg. I don't think they are unbiased.

would 104% be enough!?? thats what it went to before Sweden realized hoe wrong it was...Ingemar Bergman ,among others, left the country... you`d think over 100% wuld be too much! you read it correctly , they taxed at 104%, !!
I completely disagree on your statement about drive and who makes what happen. You have no idea what drive I have had and what I have gone through and done for others. I'm not going to explain it here either. That would be a book. I suppose you are right when it comes to each person making the decision on how much money a person needs and it being a free society. I'm not against people being wealthy. I would like to see everyone become wealthy but I highly doubt that would happen. It is admirable to make jobs for others, but if the middle class can't afford to buy then business will close. Middle class are often the people working for the companies. Both the business owners and the workers can have drive and both are equally important.

Another problem with Obama is that he is still unknown. Every day another stunning fact emerges about him. Most the media keep covered. Today a tape emerges of him telling the SF Chronicle that he plans to bankrupt the coal industry. Yesterday, we find that he has an illegal alien aunt living here in poverty. Another day we leaned that he was a member of a third party a few years back; the socialist New Party. A few days before that we hear that the LA Times is hiding a tape of a party he attended with William Ayers in honor of a PLO spokesman. And every day new requests to see his hidden birth certificate, college records, medical records, adoption papers, and past passports are fought by him. I have a growing stack of scary facts about this unknown candidate.
You do have a good point GTOken. Going into another tax bracket I think does deter people from making more.
Jim, your right about FactCheck.org. It may not be totally unbiased. The founder of the Foundation is a Republican also. I thought it was interesting sight that pointed out McCain AND Obama's false statements.
"An ignorant man thinks he knows everything, a wise man knows he doesn't."

And this is the dirty little secret of the Democrat Party. They advertise as being the party for poor people, and if they can keep you poor they will always have a captive audience. Government programs to help out the lower or no-income sector only serves to keep them there because that is their base and that is their key to staying in power.

of course I have no idea on your drive and what youve done for others...I have no idea on your age (or experience) either, and since you donst ask a woman her age ,we wont./.. lets just say...I have quite a book to write too..been around a bit, on two continents, moved 'for good' across the Atlantic 3 times...I have worked for many companies, here and there...I have had my own architectural company...I have also run my dads dealerships as gen mgr.....
but I will NOT want socislism to come to this country, and as you see abv, Jim posts where Obama once belonged to the new Soc party of the US...he definitely have leanings that way...
would you want China, Cuba, France a few years ago, Italy, USSR , Venezuela to be our role model?
but here you totally agree with me

but the last sentence is slightly wrong...bus ownwers and workers arent equally important...the business wont survive without either ,BUT the owner can hire other workers, the workers can 'normally' not start the businness w/o the owner...unless they are the owner...and now we have a corp. w multi owners...and the CEO and the stocks and the board , and so on...
I still disagree. Yes, an owner can hire other workers but he still needs workers. No, a worker can't take down a business. Consumers not buying products can. Many businesses start off from people being workers at one time. Everyone is interdependent on each other.

I would think if they found something significant, they would want to notify everyone because they would be concerned for their families too.

Interesting food for thought. Did you know that Barack Hussein Obama would probably not be able to get security clearance to be in the FBI, CIA or Secret Service. He may not even be allowed to even drive a motorcycle in his own motorcade.
His association and friendship with radical groups and terrorists would flunk him. His previous coccain abuse might or might not get by since it was years ago.
And voters will allow him access the nuke suitcase. WOW!
First off, kill all the lobbyists. They definitely contribute to corruption and poor judgment at all levels of government. Then remove the protection that corporations have, where executives and officers are not responsible for the debts and liabilities of the corporations. If a company fails, they fail. If they quit and leave, the obligation follows them.
I know perfectly well how much it takes to live, and to raise children. I also know that an education is not a guarantee of riches, but taking that first step toward personal enrichment does help. I'm continually enrolled in courses, because if I do not continue to study, I will be passed by kids learning the most current topics.
That example of a divorced single mom with 3 kids and little child support...a lot of that comes down to responsibility. A lot of people won't agree with me. There are no winners in a divorce with kids. But making the woman a "victim" is not going to help. Short term transitional aid, maybe. Not a free ride until the kids are grown.
My son is 18, in his first semester. In high school, he took the most rigorous courses he could and went to college with 24 credits from AP exams. By working hard in high school, he saved $90,000 in tuition (or is that much closer to his masters' degree). He works an on-campus job that is capped at $2,000 per year, and his student loans total $15,000 per year. He'll graduate with a debt higher than the cost of our first house. But his potential for income will start at numbers that we've only briefly brushed, and as long as he keeps his wits about him, he'll be able to pay back that long term debt and it won't hurt a bit. Some of his friends graduated high school with no plans, no ambition, and no idea how to manage life on their own. All they needed was a kick in the [censored] from their parents, not an 18 year womb.
How are you going to get a middle class income boost? Take money from the overpaid CEOs? Okay...so they boost their income to make up for what was taken out of their pocket. What does that achieve? All that money has to come from somewhere, and that somewhere is your pocket and mine, when we buy the goods or services that company provides. Try to cap or regulate maximum compensations and you'll discover a whole new world of accounting manipulation, more complex tax laws, and a whole lot more government to manage it. Capitalism is simple, supply and demand. As long as business is not regulated as to who can provide what, when, and where, the market will move to meet consumer demands.
This election is a distraction to the bigger issues facing this country. Let's get down to business.
I just wanted to comment on a few things you said. I do think getting an education does increase your likelihood of a better paying job. I don't think it's easy or possible for some to do that for different reasons. Some people are just not very smart when it comes to academics whether it's a low IQ, Down Syndrome, etc. (Some people are smarter doing other things.) That's where I think a decent minimum wage is necessary to provide a living income. Minimum wage is not the ideal system but I think it is necessary.
I'm not big on the idea of giving aid to a family until the kids are out of the house. Short term aid or maybe a few years I'm ok with until they can get themselves out of it. At one time the welfare system didn't require going to work if you went to school (up to 2 years) and they assisted those in getting schooling to get better jobs. I saw people get out of the system that way. Now they have dropped that program. Now they are forced to go back to low paying jobs because they have no skills. They still might receive some assistance in child care costs and medical assistance. Is it fair they get free education and don't have to work at the time? Maybe not but I think it was better than the alternative of staying at a low paying job and still getting a little assistance.
I wasn't suggesting capping CEO's of big corps as a solution. I'm not sure what the solution is for that. If the companies lowered salaries on CEOs, stock owners might see a bigger dividend. That's where the middle class can benefit.

No, if people (and they will) disagree, it is a matter of opinion and there is nothing wrong with disagreeing with a person or a group of people. I just feel strongly AGAINST electing Hussain as the CIC of the USA! Yet McCain would not run the J. Wright pulpit rant-and-rave, so the GOP drop'd $10 Million for the add, in my opinion it was two months too late. No McCain is not perfect but he has more the 180 days of Senatorial exp.!!! At least he has been in the trenches with everyone trying to work Bi-lateraily, Hussain is voted as the most liberial Sen. in the 2007 year and hasn't pasted anything thing of importance, has he?
I'd rather see a rust bucket on the road, than a garage queen anytime!!
Sheri, your arguments are weak. You stated: "I don't think tax cuts given to people that make less should be considered as not working hard." Who here said that? Did I miss something?

"I'm not big on the idea of giving aid to a family until the kids are out of the house." So, its ok to aid the adults but, not the children?!
"Some people are just not very smart when it comes to academics whether it's a low IQ, Down Syndrome, etc" Downs Syndrone victims, sadly, usually don't live long enough to concern themselves with generating a livable income.
How much do I need to live? As much as I want! I'm with GTOKen on this.
If the "business owners" aren't kept viable, who will hire those wage earners and heep them viable?
All this being said, I am all for helping those who have exhausted their options after doing everything they can to do it themselves. I work too hard for my family to give it away to someone who has been lazy, or who has consistently made bad decisions and bad choices...wether those decisions relate to education, marriage, drugs, or just plane stupidity!
I'm a hobbyist. Not a professional. Don't be hatin'!

Sheri, you are right in that if the middle class can't afford to buy, businesses will close. But you CANNOT take from the businesses and their owners, and hand it to the "middle class" as a gift, just so they can let the business earn it again. It does not work that way.
Since the beginning of this country, people have striven to provide a better life for their kids than they had growing up. I think that's done, I think for the most part the plateau has been reached. At first it was because of rural vs. urban opportunities, then educational opportunities, then race/sex opportunities. Now that it's reasonably close to a level playing field, some people don't want to play anymore.
This country needs people with belief in free economy, needs people with work ethic, needs people who will take a chance at failure because there is a reward for success. Penalize (tax) my success, and why should I bother?
I don't have a problem with flat tax, or national sales tax instead of income tax, or something other than what we have.

Well said as I see from my skewed perspective too many people expecting a free handout or free ride anyway they can get it. Anything to continue to contribute to this type of thinking / behavior will only negatively impact everyone working to try to get more for themselves and their family.

On the tax comment, I was referring to something GTOken said about giving to people that don't work hard. He made a good point about if a higher tax bracket pays a much higher % of taxes, it may deter some people from making more because more taxes are taken out and there income after taxes might actually be less.
"I'm not big on the idea of giving aid to a family until the kids are out of the house." What I meant was I would hope the family would be self reliant before the kids got out of the house. I don't like the idea of supporting people who keep making bad decisions either but I also don't want to see kids suffer for their parents bad decisions.
I do believe people should be rewarded for their hard work and success. I don't mean to say let's break the businesses to give to the middle and lower classes. I want balance for businesses and all classes involved so everyone benefits. Do I have the answer to that? No.
I would have to say this group has some very smart cookies and I appreciate the food for thought. I enjoy having my ideas challenged and having others open my eyes to different views. This topic has been heated but I think many made some very good points.

Sheri, thanks for the volunteering of your age, I see you now at a different perspective...makes it easiers to understand... Usually people have more socialistic or idealistic ideas at a younger age...I did too... I was actually FOR Jimmy Carter at that eection...as you grow older ,the 'tendncy' is to get more conservative...not in all cases.. you are the age between my two oldest, my daughter 35 living in Denmark...and my son 33 living in Sweden...my daughter still has some more left leaning ideas than I do, its from the environment there, my son do not....my younger kids , one daughter ,27,in LA , she went to college there, became very "Democratic" for a couple of years...but has since changed her mind...Hollywood is very left leaning and since she is trying to get in that businness, it has had a lot of impact on her thinking...my son ,just out of college from NOLA, is vERY right wing...so within the family we do discuss poilitics a bit...we have ,and have had varying positions... thats just an explanation on where I get my perspective from , being on of the older guys here, 65, not retired, probably never will....(dont know what to do with myselfif not working, plus I could probably not afford it anyway after putting kids thru private schools and colleges...) just touching that subject, college, is also "free" in Sweden...sounds good ,doesnt it....for a student is IS good, its like a student loan that you dont pay back in a few years, but your entire life, by higher taxes...and everybody else pays on your loan too...
personally, I lived in Sweden 77-78 when I got a divorce...my income then was in Swedish Crowns 5,000/mo...my inc tax vracket wasONLY 50%, so I got 2,500...good do far.. get a divorce , I pay child support , court said 900/child = 1800,.. so now I have 2500- 1800 = 700 left...apt rent was 1700...see a problem? I`m now at -1000...apt were at at 5-6 years wait in line, and a shortage... you want to eat? ,sounds good to me. as I told friends I was retyrning to the US where I could get a job that paid enough and taxes were low so I could afford to pay my child support ,they said , "but the state will help , and give you rent support, even food support"... well, I am the type that doesnt like hand outs, I like to take care of myself , my family by me working...so I came here again..I do not regret it.
thru other curcumstances I have been poor while here, I`ve also been rich here...lost amounts of money I could just dream of having....but I wouldnt trade this for anything...I really hate to see anyone with "wealth re distrubution" on his/her agenda coming to power...
and Sheri, very good discussion so far! You should have heard my discussion with my LA daughter before she was ready to vote for Gore! she evetually didnt, and now she cannot figure out how she ever was thinking tha way, but I can...it was peer pressure...I now tell her to not discuss politics with co workers, she`ll never get admitted into those Hollywood circles...LOL
and , being 34 with a 14 yr old is not that early...my ex, when I met her she was 19 then ,she had a mother at 39, a grandma at 59, a great grandma at 79...her great great had just died...if she hadnt died and we had had kids a little earlier ,when she was 20...we could have had6 generations living!!

Catching Wild Pigs
A chemistry professor in a large college had some exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in the lab the Professor noticed one young man (exchange student) who kept rubbing his back and stretching as if his back hurt
The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new communist government.
In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked, 'Do you know how to catch wild pigs?'
The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said this was no joke. 'You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come every day to eat the free corn.. When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming.
When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side. The pigs, who are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat, you slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd.
Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity.
The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening to America . The government keeps pushing us toward socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as supplemental income, tax credit for unearned income, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc.. While we continually lose our freedoms -- just a little at a time.
One should always remember: There is no such thing as a free lunch! Also, a politician will never provide a service for you cheaper than you can do it yourself.
Also, if you see that all of this wonderful government 'help' is a problem confronting the future of democracy in America , you might want to send this on to your friends. If you think the free ride is essential to your way of life then you will probably delete this email, but God help you when the gate slams shut!
In this 'very important' election year, listen closely to what the candidates are promising you !!
Just maybe you will be able to tell who is about to slam the gate on America
Huge voter turnout is expected for this election. In order to help alleviate the problem, McCain voters are being asked to vote on Tuesday. Obama supporters should go to their polling places on Wednesday.
The Republicans sent out thousands of emails and fliers with this information on it. It is disgusting and the same old Bush tactics that lie and cheat a process that should be respected. This should be a clear sign to all that the Republicans are not fit to lead. Lie to get us in a war, lie to try to win an election...... Lie to the common man to scare them into a vote that doesn't reflect their best interests.
jokes, if they arent smart enough to figure THAT ONE out, they probably shouldnt even vote! how would they figure out tax plans , national health care, national defense??
So now you want to re-write the United States Constitution to include a provision about how smart you have to be to vote? And the 'trick' emails and fliers were not sent out as a joke at all. They were sent out as an underhanded trick to make people's votes not count. A political party that does this is not fit to lead our great country.

You keep wanting to make this personal Terry. And it's a free country so you can help yourself to personal cut-downs. Feel free. In my defense; I'm quite a happy person. And I'm comfortable and healthy. I have my toys and I have no debt what-so-ever. When I speak out for the 'common man' it's not about me. I will do good no matter who wins the presidency. It's the less fortunate that I'm thinking about.... People like you Terry that have been laying in hospital beds and complaining that they can't pay their bills. I'm glad to see you are healthier this year and not looking for help to carry-on like in the previous years. If you had real health care insurance there wouldn't be as much financial burden for you when you get 'laid up'.

jim,i am not cutting you personally down, just your opinions.i have always thought highly of you as a person but i do disagree with alot of the things you have to say
Jim, that line is getting old. Today it has came out that Obama intends to bankrupt the coal industry. I don't mean to scare you but it did come from is own socialist lips.

Where did you hear that Ken? You say, "Today it came out". That's a red flag that it's propaganda. If you hear him say it then let me know. If a biased source 'Lets it out' a day before election it's a crock. Don't be afraid Ken.
Audio tapes were just released by the San Fransisco Chronicle. They had the tapes since January and just released them. Kinda strange that they held onto them for so long, huh?
