Hi all. I'm at the point where I need to select a new rear end. my stock pontiac is going to go. The engine is 500 HP, 700r4 tranny and it will see street and strip. I was wondering who out there has done a 12 bolt conversion, how hard, is there a perticular axle that is bolt in for an f body.
Engine may see shots of nitrus so I need rear to be solid.
I was thinking of going with a Air Ride Technologies kit for the rear also... uses origional brackets, bolts in..

A 12 bolt from a first gen camaro is a direct bolt in, and I believe some of the nova ones are as well. Currie and Moser also make 9 inch housings with the correct spring perches that will bolt in as well. Both Summit and Jegs sell them.

I have a 12 bolt from a Camaro in my 67. There are a few companies who make direct bolt in Ford 9 inch, but I feel a 12 bolt will suit you fine. If the car was a dedicated strip car, maybe a niner or a Dana 60.
Hope you have that 700R built up.
What gear?
If you go to a 12 bolt, I would buy a bare housing only with no internals, brakes or axles unless you are getting a heck of a deal on a complete axle (less than $1,000).
Housing $300 Moser axles $400 Gear and diff $800 Disk brake conversion $550 (Baer) Proper professional set up $250-300
Rebuilt 12 bolt Axle $2300 Used 12 bolt axle, unknown condition usually $1000-1500
I like the rebuilt.

700r4 is built up. Ya, I'm going with 12 bolt, less power loss. I'm on the lookout know what year on the novas? what am I looking for, end to end length and shock perch location/style?/ do they all differ?

If I remember, 54.5 is the length. You can try Ebay for the specs for the Nova years. I remember seeing a few there with years listed. My 12 bolt was from a 67 Camaro with mono perches. I would rather have a multi leaf 12 bolt under the 67 but unsure if it will interfere with the staggered 68 shocks.
What year Bird?

68-74 Novas have the same specs as 68-69 FGF (multi-leaf). 71 and up had the 8.5" diff; they can handle a fair bit of power when assembled correctly.

Sorry for delyed response Pete.
Its running great! Idle is nice and aggressive but, not too radical. Have not really flogged it yet...only 100 miles or so on the new build.
Heads are aluminum KRE's...cnc'd chambers and ports by SD Performance. 290 cfm. Currently running a Hooley 750. Will try upgraded carb set up soon.
As soon as I figure it out, I'll post a video of the engine so you can hear the cam...
