I have recently purchased a 68 firebird that was in the process of a body on resto.the remaining original colour is still intact in alot of areas and yess it is pink, almost the same colour as styrofoam pink insulation.I checked the cowl tag and it reads "special-1" where the paint code would be.pontiac historic services had sent a letter to the previous owner acknowledging that pink mist was the colour, I now am in posession of that letter. The other interesting item is the 160 mph speedometer. The car is a numbers matching and almost rust free survivor everything is original except for the drivers rear quarter and outer wheel well which were replaced prior to my ownership. The drivers door could use a new skin and the front fenders were lost along the way, The car was brought down from the north west territories to Ontario where I am. I would appreciate any info or feed back. Thanks

I would be very interested seeing what an orignal pink mist looks like especially on a bird. I have never see one that color but I know it was a special order option. Trust me I have tried finding the color online with no luck. I have found all the other colors except that one. I have been considering going the pink mist way since it is a rare color and I doubt not too many men would paint their bird pink. Although in the last couple years, men have been wearing pink a bit more with the "tough enough to wear pink" slogans, etc.

This is all I found about pink mist. I have never seen a pic of a bird with it.

What interior color did it come with? What engine? Did they put the optional 428 in it too?

Keep looking, there is more in the archives than that, and there are pictures. This was discussed just a few months ago.

Where in the archives? I thought I have looked through this whole site and in the main member photo gallery.

Welcome to the site.

The 160 mph speedo was standard on the '68's. '67 cars got 120 mph gauges. The color scheme of the instruments was different too.

Check out the FAQ and Tech pages. A wealth of info there.

You and Greg (67pinkfirebird) will have fun sharing notes.

Here is an article on John Middlebrooke, VP of GM global sales:

http://www.autonews.com/article/20080914/ANA09/809150335/1215/GM02

According to him, John DeLorean handed him a tube of lipstick and said they needed to have a car for Nancy Sinatra in 4 days with that color. I assume this was the beginning of Pink Mist.

I'm glad I saw pics of a pink bird. It's not quite what I pictured in my head and that's a lot of pink for me. I'm rethinking the pink and considering a lot of other colors right now. If I had an original pink bird I wouldn't change it though. I saw in an old post someone said a salesman told him the Playboy Playmates would get a pink bird. I saw in this link that Playboy gave pink Camaros (in addition to birds?).

"In July of 1969 my Grandparents purchased a 1968 Camaro that had been sitting a while on the lot at Courtesy Chevrolet in Santa Clara, CA. They needed a new car to drive to Arizona where I was to be born in a couple of months and since the car had been slow to sell the price was right. The car was a bit different in that it was a special order that wound up not being delivered to the customer it was originally intended for. Playboy had placed an order through COPO for 50 pink 1968 Camaros to be distributed to playmates through the year. They only took delivery of about 30-40 of them. The rest wound up being sent to dealers. This was one of them....and yes, I said it was pink. This was my Grandmothers car for close to 35 years. They drove it all over CA on vacations and fishing trips. In fact, to this day there are bait shops and mountain lodges that I go to and when I mention my Grandparents people say, "Oh the couple with the pink Camaro!" "

Is that a Mary Kay car for someone with a little lead in her foot?

My mom used to work at a Chevy dealer in the 60's. They had a little old lady that would come in every couple of years and bring in her pink bathrobe so her new car could be specially painted to match.

Sheri,
So far, there's no evidence to back any of that up. And you'd think more of the cars would show up, but it's the only one.

Spike,
Make sure you scan the paint to get a color match.
