We havent installed our interior yet and looking for suggestions of where to put the rear speakers in our convertible. Does anyone have pictures they could post of their rear speaker placement? Thank you,
I am looking to install speakers also, many of the posts I found have photo links that no longer exist. Vikki could you re-share pics of your install when you get a chance?
Sure...sorry, I did forget AOL Hometown and Yahoo photos both shut down and orphaned those threads.
Be sure to measure clearances. There is VERY LITTLE DEPTH in this location, and a speaker that is too deep will be hit by the top mechanism. Mine is also a power top, which may alter clearances. Mock it up and test the top operation before cutting, and be sure the wires can be routed safely.
There is a much greater depth of space in the armrest area that could be utilized, if you don't generally plan to have the rear seat occupied by passengers.
Also, since this area is exposed to weather, I used a speaker with a synthetic cone.

Wouter, Thanks for the thread and Vikki, thanks for posting those pictures. We're a few months off from putting in a sound system but the time is right for planning as we only want to cut once. Appreciate the responses!
I plan to remove the grilles this year and paint them with interior trim paint to blend in better. I will probably buy one of the Redi-Rads also, even though I have FM as well, because the AM band is much less populated.

Very nice car! I would like to see some pics of those rear head rests (and the speakers in them). If you e-mail some pics I can post them. Or click SWITCH TO FULL REPLY SCREEN at the bottom of this page and then FILE MANAGER and upload them, very easy. Here a pic of your car:
5 x 7 is the speaker dimension, not a part number.
I bought and installed my speakers in 2004, so the part numbers I used are likely obsolete. 5 1/4" round or 5 x 7 oval will fit this location, you need to find the absolute shallowest speaker you can, preferably with a non-paper cone. If you google Blaupunkt overdrive you will still find hits with technical specifications, if you can find a speaker under 2" in depth it should clear all moving parts.

check out THIS thread on that subject. I haven't done anything yet on mine, but have been thinking about it for quite some time...
Since it comes back time and again, this MIGHt be something for the Hall of Fame...
Wouter, Have you decided on a speaker configuration yet? We picked up the USA-630 radio and still contemplating the speaker set up. The thread above mentioned some speakers under the seats (thanks for posting that). I see in CI they offer UNDCOVER Speakers that should fit under the seat (need 3" clearance)and they have a dual cone front speaker that fits in the original dash location. We wouldnt have to cut the kick panels or the rear piston covers if we went this way.
Has anyone tried the speakers under the seats? Finding 6x9's like Vikki mentions for the rear, with less than 2" depth has been diffacult.
I may be putting 6x9 tri's in the rear arm rests. This location may limit the volume if you have rear passengers. Since I rarely have them, I have chosen this location because it's more of an enclosure. It's still in doubt since I'm not going to cut up my originals. I bought a spare pair to cut for the openings... but the seller sold me coupe arm rests. So now I need to find out if they can be altered to fit convertible.
I didn't get to it yet, but I agree I would rather not cut up the kick panels. I will probably go for "invisible" speakers, so underneath the seats would be good.
Interested in any ideas though, so if you go for it, please post pics!

I'm pretty sure (I may have this backwards) you can trim the bottom of the coupes to turn them into converts.
They can. I just had to do that with our. The aftermarkets we bought from CI did not fit so I cut coupe panels and they fit perfect now. Guess I'll return the CI panels. Not cheap at $55 each.
