A friend moved and she gave me a painted wood table and chairs set. It needs to be refinished. I've painted and stained wood but have not stripped paint from wood. Does any one have any recommendations for what paint stripper to use? I want something that works really well but would rather not have a strong smell or be too hazardous.

I've used this on a desk that was painted over varnish and it took both layers off with a scraper. I used the spray can version. It is very caustic but works quickly. Then I cleaned all the excess residue with an old towel, sanded it, wiped it down with rubbing alcohol and repainted it with deck paint.
I use the standard polystrip on easy stuff....funny tho, when I was sandblasting my bird parts, people were in the "u-strip" place with furniture....they seemed to be doing the basic srip with chemical strippers, then going to the U-strip place to get the paint out of the carving work....some of the results were awesome...not sure but I believe they were using the walnut shell booth...
when chemical striping i use a piece of hard woord sharpened like a scrapper as to not damage the wood im strippin do a trial piece so u can tell weather the striper is to aggresive
Thanks guys for the tips. I'll check some of those products when I get to the store. I will be doing it out in the garage so I think it will be well ventilated. I never thought of using deck paint or stain. I might use that.

I used American Tradition Porch and Floor enamel oil high gloss white and it has held up really good on our computer desk. I figured being that it is meant for high traffic of a floor it should last a long time on a desk. Been 2 years and almost a good as the day I painted it.
I just used a 3M product to strip door jams -- a little messy but not odor and works great!

I saw that product online and was wondering how well it worked. I like the fact that it's odorless and seems less hazardous. I think I might pick up some 3M now that I know it works well too.

What store did you get it from? I'm not sure if they will have that in my town or not. Walmart, Runnings, a few paint and hardware stores is what I have to choose from.

No Lowes here. I would have to drive 100 miles to Bismarck to visit a Lowes. I will probably be there for Easter so maybe I can check it out then. If not, I will find something that will work.

I'm sure any good name brand porch and floor enamel would work. Don't buy Walmart brand paint, it is made by Sherwin Williams, which is a good brand, but is watered down for the cheaper Walmart price. That is what they told me when I was inspecting their manufacturing facility and noticed Walmart paint cans zipping down the assembly line.
