Hello all... I'm in the process of replacing my front floor pans on my 67 bird. The back one's are ok, and part the the floor is already painted and has some rubberized spray. I'm looking to paint the entire floor again and protect it from rusting away. I have been told about the POR 15 but there are other coatngs being sold by Eastwood such as out like Rust Converter. Can anyone tell me what is the best to use to paint the surface.. Do I have to grind the old paint off the floor pans to use these products.. I figure someone here has done this before and can give me some guidance. Thanks all.. Help..

POR 15 is a coating, its what I used...its good. The rust converter is just that, a converter, you would still have to use a topcoat.

POR 15 only requires a topcoat if it is exposed to sunlight, or it will turn brown so I hear.

I believe Eastwood has some similar products to POR, but I used the POR and am happy with it....just don't get it on you, it won't come off till the skin wears off....

Or you can go my route:

I covered all my floor pans with a liquid sound dampening material. Coats the floor to prevent rust and helps quiet the car.

Salmon , can this product be brushed on, or do you need a special spray gun to add it on?

go with por-15, i have a friend that coated a volkswagen bug shell's floorpans and then it layed outside uncoverd for like 5 years and when he finally got around to putting the bug back together there was no rust. i was there to see it and this was in NJ so it had lots of rain.
that stuff is great but to much $ lol

Its called VB-1X and despite all the literature about spraying it on, I used a brush and it worked well. I saw the idea from a GTO restoration once.

Salmon, Now will this protect the floor from rust?, it seems like it more for sound.

If they are compatible (and the POR people can tell you) I'd go POR and then some form of sound deadening, either liquid applied VB1X or sheet goods...

I personaly like PPG's DP50 sealer/epoxy primer. You can use a spray gun to put it on and top coat it w/anything w/out having issues. I used it on every panel for my car. Couldn't be happier.

Yes, that is for sound dampening, but it sure coats the floor pans well. I made sure the floor pans were well covered with at least primer 1st.
