Does anyone have or know where I can find a pattern for mounting a camaro rear spoiler on my 69 firebird? I do not like trying to guess where to drill the holes. I would hate to mess up my trunk by drilling the holes in the wrong place. I know some of you will think I am messing my trunk up by mounting a camaro spoiler on it in the first place but I am hoping you will forgive me long enough to help me with this. Thanks, David
I have one on my 69, but the holes are in a bad spot so I can't help you with a fastener pattern. All I can say is position the holes such that they dont ruin the trunk seal (like they do on my car!).
Take a piece of cardboard, push the studs of the spoiler through so you cam mate the cardboard flush to the base of the spoiler, then trim it to match the contour of the shape of the spoiler.
Then take the carboard patern, and position it on the deck lid with about 1/4" forward of the rear edge of the deck lid (or where you feel it will look the best, just not right at the trailing edge, it will almost hang over then!)
Then transfer the holes from the template to the deck lid, and double check the under side where you'll have to notch out the holes larger for the speed nuts etc... and to make sure as Dave said... you won't run into the seal or anything else! (oh and make sure it's a 69 spoiler that goes all the way to the body edge at the top of the 1/4 panels... had a friend who was sent a 68 spoler for his 69, and it's about 3/4" shorter on each side) Doh!
Before you start drilling on that nice Firebird trunk lid maybe you can find someone who wants to get rid of that Camaro part on their Bird. They would probably pay you to trade lids just to get their car looking like a Bird again. Sorry, I couldn't help it. Jim
Go to classic industries website and download the catalog for the camaros- it has the template in it.
I am in the same boat- i have a spoiler and a rust free bird lid. I am going to look for another lid that has the holes drilled. When I paint the car I am going to paint both.
Last time the scrap guy came to my house I sent twenty(OK well maybe not that many) Firebird lids with camaro spoilers to the scrap yard. Everytime I get the chance I swap them off. Someday I will go on a mission to rid the world of the Camaro spoilers on Birds. Can't blame a guy for having dreams! Jim :p
To be TOTALLY honest, I was LOOKING for a camaro, when I found my bird. But when I realized there were alot more camaro's than Firebird's, it just made the deal that much sweeter. Trust me, I LOVE my Blackbird! Some times I lay there at nite thinking about her and what I can do next to/with her! My wife gives me aot of grief about my "obsession" for my "black wife". I also have a '73 Ranchero that is one bad*ss truck! My wife drives a 2002 Mustang, and we just bought a '69 Firebird for my 14 year old son to start working on. So you see guys, we all have different ways to "get around". Hey, it's your $, do what makes YOU happy! Speaking of happy, I was thinking of putting one of those '69 Daytona Charger spoilers on my wifes Mustang..........
Kel, Don't get me wrong, It's your car and I think it should be just the way you like it. I just don't understand why you want to put Camaro parts on it. I like my 69 Z-28 almost as much as my Firebird. I really like the spoiler on my Z because it was built that way. To each his own! Jim
Ames sells the '69 Trans Am type spoiler in fiberglass.
2012 Mustang Boss 302 #1918, Competition Orange. FGF replacement 2006 Mustang V6 Pony, Vista Blue. Factory ordered. 2019 BMW X3 (Titled to the wife, but I'm always driving it for her. So I'm claiming it) Old projects, gone but not forgotten: 1967 FB 400, original CA car. After 22 years of work, trashed by the guy who was supposed to paint it. I had to sell it. 1980 Turbo Trans Am 1970 Mustang fastback, 351C 4Bbl, auto 1988 Mustang GT, 5 speed 1983 F-150 4x4, built 302 1994 Chevy K2500 HD 4x4, 454 TBI
Bjorn, there are many differences to the trained eye but very few more obvious to the untrained eye than that spoiler that you see on tons of first gen Camaros that never came from the factory on a Pontiac Firebird.
Very few 1st gen Camaros came with the spoiler. It's interesting watching the car show judges measuring the trunk spring rods to see if they are correct. It's also a kick to see all the 1st gen fbodies all in a row with the trunk lids up at a car show. A little breeze in the wrong direction and all the fake spoiler cars trunk lids slam shut in unison. The correct spring rods are worth a fortune. Don't bother checking your Firebird trunk springs because you will not find the heavy duty one. If you have any Camaro parts cars it would be worth a look. Jim
Ok guys , I give up , you are right....I shall go home tonite and take the Camaro spoilers off! Yeah right!, and I`ve got a beach front lot for sale in El Paso too...lol
Nahh, I think I just keep `em on... I just like the looks...
bjorn,i have a great spoiler for you here.you can remove that cammo spoiler and put this 69 TA spoiler on.they look alot better anyway.i may install one on my plane jane 350 car some day.
I never thought anyone would remove their spoiler because of a posting. I was hoping that maybe, just maybe, someone would think twice about adding a spoiler. Also, it has become evident that some Bird owners did not know that the spoilers are not original equipment for their Birds. For me, it is like talking a friend out of an elective surgery that they really don't need. Bjorn, since you bought your car with the spoiler, if you had the decision to make, would you add the spoiler to your car if you had a perfect trunk lid??
Jim ,you are correct ...I did buy it w spoiler, and prob. would have prefered it w/o it, BUT after driving it for awhile and I then added the front 'snowplow', I found I really liked the performance part...
and Terry , thanks for the offer , but then I get into paint again , etc....I am really hoping to 'be done'.....I thought I was saturday!, but then sunday that ball joint broke...
Bjorn, You are one "truely honest" dude. Sorry to hear about the ball joint. If I lived closer I would offer a hand and you could borrow my "yet to be patented" spring compressor. Jim
I bought my car with a trunk spoiler, and I like the look, but I concur that I would not drill a nice trunk lid to install one. Tastes change over time, and five years down the road you might wish it was not there, then what do you do. Or you might want to sell the car next year and the spoiler might decrease the value, especially if it's installed incorrectly.
I would not think twice about installing a front spoiler though. they take care of front end float big time.
My 69 convertible has the Camaro spoiler. When I get around to the bodywork I'll replace it with the TA spoiler which to me, looks much cooler. The ironic thing is that my other trunk lid without the holes came off a 67 Camaro.
My buddy , (former restorer) is currently installing my new ball joints , upper and lower , both sides, evidently these were fairly old , but I do have good tie rods and the rest of the stuff is almost new, should be good for 95mph plus again...lol he`s also checking my 'lean' to see if frame is bent or springs were not installed properly,so I`m in good hands , but thanks for the offer JIm!
Bjorn, You should check the A-arm bushings. They can make the car lean. It is usually the lower passenger bushing. The one towards the back gets most of the abuse/weight. I have seen as much as 1" play. Jim
Well, I hate to tell everyone, but I "ruined" a perfectly good trunk lid so I could put my "Camaro" spoiler on!
What can I say? I've had 5 Firebirds over the years and 4 of them had the rear spoiler, including my first one. I've always liked the way the car looks with one, even more than the TA spoiler.
I put it in the category of "making the car the way I like!"
John, Now that you went and did it, Congratulations on your new look! I'm sure you will be much happier now and that's important. I know what it's like to look at a car and see something that looks like it needs changing. LOL. Are you planning on adding a front spoiler? If you have a 69 you can use a 68 spoiler and it will grab a little more air. The 68's stick down about an inch lower. Jim
