has anyone had as much problems as I have had installing the dougs headers? The drivers side header is VERY close to the gear box, we actually had to do some fabricating when we were told no fabricating was necessary. We were also told from dougs that there headers would line up with our Pypes exhahust system. we measured and the headers are 22" apart while the pypes exhaust system is 20"... anyone have any problems?? as of right now we are very disappointed in dougs.
I haven't installed Dougs Headers yet(Iam laying in a hospital bed I will when I get out), but from the beginning to the end of my car I have learned a couple important things: Every part fits differently, especially different brands. and when they say fits perfectly, no modifications for a firebird they're wrong. Almost every header I have seen for Firebids, Camaro's, and Novas have problems with the steering gear. My family has 3 of these cars and our solution: a BFH used WISELY. I emphasize wisely.
I have Doug's on a 67 400 auto coupe. They fit great with the exception of being a bit too close to the floor boards on the driver's side. I had to put a very small dimple in the floor to allow for clearance for the top of the collector flange.
I also thought the width of the Pypes system is adjustable out from the front of the X-pipe as those pipes come forward at an angle and the lengths determine the width at the headers. I have the instructions here with me as I am getting ready to have my Pypes system installed soon.

I also have Doug's headers on a 67 Coupe, 4 spd, and the only problem I have run into, is that the pitman arm was the straight one, instead of the curved model, so when the tires were turned fully to the right, the pitman arm hit, so replaced with the correct curved model, and things are good. I did install an oil filter relocation kit as well.
I also found that where the collector comes out on the drivers side, it is 2 1/4 inches off center from where the crossmember is designed to allow the exhaust to go by. what did you do in order for it to fit past the gear box? I don't want to beat in the headers. Also for anyone that didn't know, we checked the levelness on the header flanges where it meets up to the heads and it was quite out of level. We had to sand down the middle a lot. i can understand a little out of level in the middle so where you can draw up the end bolts but this was rediculous!!
I did not have any of the out of plumb problems you are describing. I suggest you contact the place you purchased them or Doug's directly.
My headers are centered in the two humps in my TH 400 crossmemember. Perhaps there is a difference between those for an auto car and manual (can't remember at the moment).

I installed Dougs headers on my 69 convertible, had trouble because I needed bodymounts, and engine mounts. Once the mounts were replaced the headers lined up so good I could thread them in with my fingers. It was tough getting them there though, and it is close to the steering box. I also have the pypes system, and believe you problem is with the pypes system not the headers. I was incredibly disappointed with the pypes system and had problems from front to back. I actually had to have a shop cut me new tailpipes because no matter what i did(or the mufflershop did) they would not fit. Just my experience.
