Gang, I plan on dropping the fuel tank this week to replace the sending unit. Any general comments/suggestions on this task would be appreciated. Is there a good post on the website here that covers it all?

I just did this two weeks ago when I replaced the rear end, springs, shocks and installed a new tank.
Disconnect the battery. Disconnect the fuel line (and return line if you have one). Diconnect the ground wire, it might be hard to see but it should be screwed to the frame kind towards the center of the tank. Remove the license plate to get access to the two hose clamps on the filler tube and loosen those. Remove the gas tank door and the 4 screws on the filler neck. Hopefully you have a near empty tank. There are two nuts holding the tank straps in place, unscrew and the tank should drop down at an angle and slide right out. Be careful as the sending unit wire needs to be disconnected as you do this and before you drop the tank all the way down. It's just a snap on connection.
The reason I took off the gas door and removed the filler neck is it's a lot easier to line up on the install with that short piece of hose connecting the neck and the tank. Use a brass drift to tap the sending unit retaining ring loose, then you can pull the unit out.
Hope that helps.

I`d suggest to drive it so its almost empty first....or at least siphon just about all gas out..you`ll be surprised on how heavy it gets with just a little gas in it ,esp if you`re streching up to take the tank...like on a lift or such.

When you reinstall the sending unit use a little vasoline on the rubber ring gasket. This will help spinning the fitting on without damaging the gasket.

Mine appears to be a two-hose sending unit, so that is what I'll buy tomorrow. Also, I cannot find any main 7-wire connector assembly in the trunk as described in the FAQ here.

Instead, I have five wires going from the rear lights area all the way up the left drivers side, through the trunk wall, into the rear seat area with no 7-wire connector as described in the FAQ area.

The sender is a one wire connector right behind the filler assy. in the trunk. You should see two, one for the license lamp and the other is the sender.

Yep, got that one Jeff. But in the FAQ (electrical) area of this website it explains a simple test you can do to verify the sender is the problem. It refers to a seven-wire connector coming into the trunk area (prior to splitting off to rear lights, etc).

I don't recall ever seeing that particular connector. It may be up behind the drivers kick panel or somewhere near the rear seat area.

One thing you can do is pull the connector in the trunk to the sender with the key on and if the gauge goes past full then it is probably not the gauge. Once you pull the sender you can check it with a meter, the full sweep should be 0-90 ohms.
