I have a 68 firebird and read on another post that park lights went off when headlights went on and functioned only as turn signals. OK- Mine stay on all the time so I believe there lies the problem. 1. No short fuse at the bottom was in place when I bought the car. 2. Someone had spliced into the brown and grey wires from the light switch behind the instrument cluster and added a 5 amp fuse marked park lights and dash lights. 3. I reconnected the wires correctly from the light switch and added a fuse- pop goes the fuse when lights turned on. No power to dash lights. 4. See photo of wiring harness and connector that has been cut and two wires connected that went to that connector. What can you tell me about this connector and it's function. Thanks
OK I had that wrong- any suggestions for where to look since short fuse blowing when lights turned on? Dash out and connector unplugged. My wiring diagram not the greatest Anyone have one easy to read? Thanks
That connector is your voltage regulator connector. Do you have and externally regulated or internally(1 wire) alternator.
That short fuse you speak of is for the dash lights.
Seems like you have a lighting short somewhere. You'll need trace down all the light circuits to find it. Someone may have ran into the problem you are currently faced with and that's why the headlamp light harness was modified.
Internal regulator- Why would they connect the two cut wires fro the voltage regulator wiring connector- Is that needed to complete a different circuit non related to the dash lights problem? I'll look closely in the dash lights circuit- the harness is unplugged from the circuit board so it must be one of the other lights that is shorted out.

That splice must have been done for the one wire alternator. Won't affect your lighting problem, unless when you plug in the dash connector the GEN light screams at you, which I have a feeling it will???
Was not an issue when I bought the car and drove it- I jumped across the small fuse and it blew the 20A light circuit fuse. This is when head lights are turned on.
I think you have a short to ground somewhere in the circuit. This is kind of good, you can start disconnecting things until you find which plug/connector/bulb socket, etc. is causing your problem.
I had this problem, kinda, My fuse blew when I turned on the lights. I traced it down to, of all things, the turn signal switch that I had put in and shorted one of the wires to the lights. Unplug your turn signal switch and then turn on the lights to see if it blows the fuse still.
