I had the engine rebuilt on my newly aquired '68 firebird and upgraded to a turbo 350 trans in place of the 2-speed that came in the car. The car is an original a/c car. I am slowly putting things back on the engine. My question is how is the oil dipstick tube that comes out of the block routed? Right now, it comes out under the exhaust manifold which I thought was correct but I can't get the dipstick to insert all the way in the tube. Does the tube go between the exhaust manifold and the head? I have both pieces of dipstick tube(in case you were wondering). Thanks in advance.
Ok, that's one problem solved. I bent the dipstick tube back up so it exits between the head and the exhaust manifold. I can get the dipstick in there now. The upper part of the dipstick tube is missing the tab needed to bolt it to the valve cover. Do they reproduce that upper piece?
RPE197D 1967-69 DIP STICK TUBE, Upper w/AC...................$34.00/ea Stainless steel. Bracket is tig welded to overcome broken spot welds. Bracket correctly attaches to the front valve cover bolt as original. Orig GM part #-9789290.
I haven't ordered one, so I can't verify it is correct.
Were 67s different than 68? Here is a shot of the upper tube on my 67 with A/C. Even though the tab is mangled, there is no way it will reach down to the rocker cover bolt. Maybe it attached somewhere to one of the (now missing) A/C compressor brackets?
Oh... from the Pontiac Information Manual (see PDF), maybe I have a tube from a different car?
