I have the timing cover and parts off of the front end of motor (68 400). I have had some recommendations as to where to get parts, but there are a few suggestions. I would like to source the parts from one location, if possible.
I have contacted NPD - Michigan. They have the timing cover (C-0206-203A). Does anyone know if this is an identical match to my original. There seems to possibly be some discrepency between 68-69? Also, NPD says they can't get a gasket but they have a bolt kit (C-0414-50K). Also, as previously mentioned, there is supposed to be a rubber seal/bushing to seal the intake and the timing cover. Would this seal/bushing come with the timing cover? If not, how can I get one.
I can get the water pump and gasket from NPD, but no new bolt kit (I need a new bolt kit).
I can get the fuel pump from NPD.

As far as the gasket set, use this Felpro TCS45166 set.

You can also get the fuel/water pumps at your local parts house as well.

You probably do NOT want to get the new water pump for a local chain store.

There is the issue of stamped (aftermarket) vs cast impellors (like OEM). The cast impellor flows so much better that a stamped impellor water pump could cause overheating issues.

Either you have to go to a local place and open every box (and my NAPA did not have any good ones) or order from someone like Ames that sells that style only.

And what about the 2 water shields to go behind the water pump? Some Pontiac specialty places have them now in stainless steel.

This is true, but I just picked one up at Kragen/O'reillys and it was cast. I actually haven't seen a stamped impeller since I pulled the one off my engine that had been put on in the 80's about 20 years ago. But good point, nonetheless!

don't forget to replace the crankshaft seal...

You really don't need a "bolt kit". Just get the right size bolts from a local supplier...and your local O'Riely's should be able to get the gaskets you need. Mine did.

...and yes. The '68 covers are different from the later timing covers...as are the associated water pumps and divider plates.

I have a brand new 68 water pump that I purchased before I realized my engine builder put a 69 front cover on my motor. I will sell for 1/2 whatever the going rate is from NPD plus shipping. PM me if interested.

Classic sells Cardone Industries water pumps and they have cast impellers, brand new, and almost identical to the original. I just put one on my engine 2 days ago. However, I don't see a listing for 428...

428 uses the same water pump as 400/350. The water pump is matched up to the timing cover.

Just keep in mind that through 68 and back was an 8-bolt timing chain cover and 69 and up went to the 11 bolt. It's been my experience that a lot of 68 and older Pontiacs have been switched over to the later 11-bolt type as they have been more common.

So basically double check your timing chain cover and order accordingly. In addition, the pulleys were also different and I have seen many 68 and older Pontiacs with 8-bolt timing chain covers but then had 69 and newer pulleys. This stuff over the years gets mixed up and the problem is pulley allignment.

I went through hell to round up all the correct pulleys, an 8-bolt timing cover etc. just prior to the car being totaled. LOL However, I now know what to look for etc. It sure makes a difference when you have all the correct parts. Pulleys line up, so you don't throw belts, water pump spins at the correct RPMs etc. etc.
